Role 1 - Systems Toxicology and Data
 

Degree requirements: Biomedical/Life Sciences/Genetics/Genomics/Molecular Biology/Toxicology

Overview of the Department
 

Non-clinical Safety is responsible for evaluating whether a candidate medicine has an acceptable safety profile to progress into clinical testing, and for supporting risk assessment throughout development. This includes the early identification and characterisation of potential safety liabilities, the design and interpretation of in vitro and in vivo studies where appropriate, and investigations into the underlying mechanisms of toxicity. 

Key Placement Learnings 

• Work within a molecular biology laboratory to investigate mechanisms of toxicity, applying a range of omics-based techniques to support pre-clinical safety assessments. 

• Perform laboratory-based experiments including cell culture, NGS library preparation, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), qPCR, and laboratory automation workflows. 

• Apply coding, bioinformatics, and data science approaches to analyse complex biological datasets, supporting toxicogenomic investigations and the evaluation of drug safety profiles. 

• Conduct data analysis to inform scientific decision-making, validate experimental systems, and generate insights into potential adverse effects of drug candidates. 

• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across biology, toxicology, bioinformatics, and data science, contributing to project delivery and knowledge sharing. 

• Participate in team meetings and delivered presentations on project progress, results, and recommendations to scientific stakeholders. 

• Develop a strong understanding of the end-to-end drug discovery and development pipeline, with practical experience applying advanced omics technologies to support non-clinical toxicology and drug development programmes. 

Role 2 - Quantitative Toxicologist 
 

Degree requirements: Physical Science (e.g. mathematics, statistics, chemistry, engineering, physics or computing) OR Biological Science (e.g. biology, biomedical science, physiology, molecular biology) with an A level in mathematics or physics.

Overview of the Department
 

The Non-Clinical Safety Department is responsible for assessing the safety profile of medicines in development by identifying and understanding potential adverse effects before clinical testing in humans. Within the Systems Toxicology and Data Team, this placement involves applying computational and data-driven approaches to analyse, model, and integrate toxicology data from multiple sources. Working closely with toxicologists and multidisciplinary scientists, the role supports evidence-based decision-making and contributes to the understanding of non-clinical safety risks throughout drug development. 

Key Placement Activities 

• Applied computational methods, including data analysis and dose-response modelling, to support non-clinical safety assessments and decision-making. 

• Analysed and integrated toxicology data from in vitro, in vivo, and in silico studies to support the evaluation of drug safety profiles. 

• Developed data visualisation and modelling outputs to identify trends, interpret results, and answer key safety questions. 

• Collaborated with toxicologists and multidisciplinary teams to understand non-clinical safety challenges and provide computational solutions. 

• Documented methodologies, analyses, and findings accurately, ensuring results were communicated clearly and effectively to stakeholders. 

• Utilized programming tools such as R, Python, or MATLAB to manage, analyze, and model complex scientific datasets. 

Role 3 – Cheminformatics

Degree requirements: Chemistry, Physics, Pharmacy, Maths or Computer Science.

Placement Overview

The Cheminformatics placement in DAPS involves applying computational techniques to discover better and safer small molecule medicines for patients. We use both modern and generative models for use in drug discovery and to solve problems encountered by our drug design teams. Furthermore, we work with state-of-the-art computational methods and infrastructure, including 2D and 3D modelling, quantum mechanics and molecular simulation. On this placement, you will work in a team with diverse research interests including classical cheminformatics, machine learning, explainable AI, uncertainty estimation, transfer learning and generative design using large internal molecular datasets.

Key Placement Learnings

• Conduct data analysis and visualisation using cutting edge data and tools.
• Contribute code to our machine learning platforms and models that we are developing on site.
• Implement and evaluate novel methods which add to our automated design platform.
• Utilise datasets from various fields such as bioactivity, physical chemistry properties, DMPK and Toxicology.
