Get paid every week, on time. This position is a Monday to Friday day shift. This position could be subject to a modified 5-day work week that may include weekend overlap.  The In‑Cab Instructor is responsible for organizing, delivering, and evaluating driver training programs for entry‑level, experienced, and transitioning drivers. This role supports compliance, safety, onboarding, and continuous driver development through in‑cab instruction, classroom facilitation, and simulator‑based training.

The instructor conducts road evaluations, supports recruiting and assessment activities, and acts as a subject‑matter resource on regulatory and operational requirements.

Training delivery includes hands‑on, in‑class, and simulation‑based instruction, with a strong emphasis on coaching safe, compliant, and professional driving behaviors.

  • Must be able to work outdoors and facilitate tours with some office environment.
  • Must be able to stand and walk on level and uneven surfaces, twist, bend, push, pull, crouch, climb stairs, bend and crawl, grasp, drag, lift and carry items weighing 50 lbs. or less. 
  • Reports directly to the AVP, Safety & Driver Development.
  • Works closely with the Senior Manager, Safety, Safety Counselors, Driver Development Instructors and Scheduler.
  • Collaborates with Driver Services, Operations, Administration, and Maintenance departments.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities

Driver Evaluation, Instruction & Training: The primary responsibility is to organize and facilitate all driver training as it relates to compliance, safety, new employee onboarding, and ongoing driver development. This includes:

  • Conducting road tests and evaluations to identify any driving or equipment issues on candidates.
  • Identifying training requirements aligned with corporate safety and performance goals
  • Instructing and advising drivers and owner operators on company policies, procedures, standards, and safety philosophies.
  • Conducting simulator assessment tools to evaluate driver knowledge and performance.
  • Assessing learner progress through observation and documented evaluations.
  • Developing and delivering specialized programs as required (e.g., Adverse Conditions Campaigns).
  • Preparing and administering all required training materials and supplies.
  • Identifying training gaps, trends, and issues and proposing solutions to management.

Operation of Tractor-Trailer Equipment: Instructors are required to operate tractor‑trailer units as part of training, evaluation, and support activities. Responsibilities may include:

  • Transporting, picking up, dropping, parking, and positioning loaded and empty trailers and tractors.
  • Loading and unloading freight, including manual assistance as required.
  • Cranking trailer dollies, pulling 5th‑wheel pins, and adjusting axles.
  • Legalizing loads through scaling and weight adjustments.
  • Fueling tractors, reefers, heaters, and DEF systems.
  • Backing into loading and unloading docks.
  • Complying with load securement and security procedures.
  • Operating temperature‑controlled equipment (heater, reefer, multi‑temperature units).
  • Assessing road, traffic, and weather conditions.
  • Adapting driving techniques to cargo, equipment, and conditions.
  • Practicing defensive driving, space management, and hazard recognition.
  • Monitoring alertness and fatigue levels.
  • Safely operating equipment during night driving and adverse weather.
  • Maintaining a professional attitude and representing the company positively at all times.

Compliance & Regulatory Adherence: The Instructor must understand, demonstrate, and train others in full compliance with all applicable regulations, including:

  • Federal, provincial/state, and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Highway Traffic Act and highway safety rules.
  • Hours of Service regulations.
  • Occupational Health & Safety requirements.
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods.
  • Weights and dimensions.
  • Load securement and cargo handling requirements.
  • Permit conditions.
  • Customs and border crossing regulations.
  • All company policies and procedures.

Documentation & Logbooks: Responsible for accurate completion and review of required driver documentation, including:

  • Driver logbooks.
  • Bills of lading verification.
  • Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (/E‑DVIR).
  • Accident, incident, and cargo claims reports.
  • Canada/U.S. Customs documentation.
  • Hazardous materials documentation.

Communication:

  • Communicate professionally and effectively with drivers, customers, coworkers, dispatch, safety, maintenance, and leadership.
  • Represent the company professionally in all written, verbal, and electronic communications.

Other Duties:

  • Developing, organizing, and delivering training programs in appropriate formats, including:
  • Classroom instruction.
  • Simulator training.
  • Provide backup support to Safety Counselors as required.
  • Act as a resource for up‑to‑date regulatory knowledge.
  • Assist with problem‑solving and cross‑departmental coordination.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the AVP, Safety and Driver Development.
  • Demonstrated organization, time‑management, and instructional skills
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use training and documentation systems
  • Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interpret maps, bills of lading, manuals, and regulatory documents
  • Proficient numeracy skills for calculations and scheduling
  • Professional appearance and good physical condition

Qualifications

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment.
  • Kneeling and crouching required for vehicle inspections.
  • Operation of a commercial motor vehicle with full physical dexterity.
  • Ability to slide trailer axles, which involves lateral pulling.
  • Could be subject to environmental exposure that consists of outside temperature extremes and direct sunlight.
  • Ability to lift/carry/position light to heavy freight units up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to hook/unhook trailers which involves lateral pulling and twisting/bending to raise/lower trailer dollies and release 5th wheel lock.
  • Ability to enter and exit a commercial motor vehicle or trailer with a height of up to 5 feet, utilizing hand and foot positioning points.

Licensing & Certifications:

  • Valid Class 1/AZ Driver’s License.
  • Experience with 53’ van trailers.
  • Dangerous Goods Certification.
  • Air Brakes Certification.

Driver Record Requirements:

  • Clear driver abstract with:
    • No preventable accidents in the past 3 years.
    • No more than 3 demerit points.
    • No recent convictions.
    • No accident convictions greater than 3 years old.
    • No impaired driving convictions greater than 5 years old.
