DESCRIPTION:
As a Civil / Structural Design Engineer at Frontier-Kemper, you will have the opportunity to be an integral member of the Engineering Division at Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. The Civil/Structural Engineer will work on mining and heavy civil construction projects as well as hoisting equipment projects. Design work will include construction plan preparation, hoisting equipment design and manufacture, mining shaft and slope design, and construction support for all aspects of mining and heavy civil construction projects. The Civil Engineering team works as part of an in-house multi-disciplinary technical unit that supplies design, analysis and consulting services for both internal and external customers. In this role, the Civil/Structural Engineer will interact with peers, consultants, outside vendors and clients, as appropriate.
Engineer and stamp civil/structural systems, structures, and components related to the civil and structural engineering of tunnel boring, mine shaft sinking, and mine development projects.
Assist with modifications to existing equipment, systems, structures, and components.
Provide technical support to the Civil, Mining and FKCI – Lake Shore Divisions.
Assist with project planning and technical quotes for systems, structures, and components.
Ensure compliance with safety standards related to civil/structural systems, structures, and components.
Ensure designs meet both building code requirements along with mining and tunneling industry requirements.
Assist in responding to site-based requests for information, including analysis and recommendations.
Prepare and present project documents including calculations, drawings, specifications, and reports.
Direct a project-based team in the development of engineering drawings.
Travel to site, as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
Undergraduate or Graduate Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
A minimum of 5 years of work experience, preferably in a field related to underground construction and/or mining.
A licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) or able to register as a licensed P.E. within 6 months.
Professional licensure in California is desirable.
Experience in engineering of structural steel and reinforced concrete structures.
Experience with and knowledge of IBC, ASCE, AISC, and ACI building and material codes.
Knowledgeable of MSHA and OSHA regulations with a strong safety approach to engineering.
Understanding of wood and masonry engineering is a plus.
Proficient in preparation of structural calculations utilizing structural analysis software and hand calculations.
Proficient with RISA or other Finite Element Analysis software.
Experience in heavy civil construction and specifically tunneling is desirable.
Geotechnical engineering and/or support of excavation (SOE) engineering experience is desirable.
Surface grading, drainage, stormwater, and site layout engineering experience is advantageous.
Knowledge of Autodesk Inventor and/or Revit software is desired.
