Job Description:

Independently prepares and dispenses patient-specific medication doses, ensuring correct drug, dose, dosage form, expiration dating, and barcode scanning. Independently compounds and manages complex and sterile medication preparations, including chemotherapy and hazardous formulations, following USP <795>, <797>, <800> guidelines and institutional protocols. Provides coverage in advanced pharmacy practice areas, including hazardous cleanroom compounding, CII safe management, medication history programs, decentralized clinical support, environmental monitoring, technician inventory check (where authorized), and pharmacy inventory and purchasing management.

Independently manages medication inventory operations, including ordering, receiving, stocking, stock rotation, expired medication removal, perpetual inventory counts, controlled substance audits, reconciliation, and diversion prevention. Monitors proper medication storage, including cold chain custody, quarantine areas, and overall inventory integrity. Supports formulary management and contributes to inventory optimization strategies.

Identifies safety risks, contributes to root cause analysis, and supports initiatives to reduce medication errors. Leads hazardous medication handling practices, including spill response, PPE training, environmental safety audits, and compliance with USP <800> and institutional protocols. Participates in compliance audits, medication-use process improvements, regulatory inspection readiness, accreditation surveys, and operational accountability initiatives.

Collaborates with pharmacy staff, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care and ensure continuity of pharmacy services. Serves as a liaison between pharmacy and clinical teams to resolve medication-related issues. Supports onboarding, competency validation, peer development, training programs, and mentorship of pharmacy learners and staff. Participates in quality improvement, educational initiatives, and practice advancement efforts.

Provides leadership and coverage in core pharmacy practice areas, including central/distributive pharmacy operations, decentralized services, automated dispensing cabinet (ADC) management, and cleanroom compounding. Serves as a resource for workflow optimization, pharmacy automation systems, ADC troubleshooting, software platforms, system upgrades, configuration changes, and technology training. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology [Required]

  • Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English [Required]

  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office [Required]

  • Ability to teach pharmacy technician students [Preferred]

  • Proficiency in hospital computer system technology and automation [Preferred]

  • Knowledge and competence in aseptic techniques, hazardous drug compounding and USP 795, 797 and 800 standards (if applicable) [Preferred]

  • Knowledge and competence in the medication reconciliation process (if applicable) [Preferred]

  • Updated with certification equivalency “Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT) [Required] OR Licensed Pharmacy Technician (RPhT) [Required]”

Education:

  • High School Grad or Equiv [Required]

  • Associate [Preferred]

Work Experience:

  • 1+ year of contemporary hospital pharmacy experience, retail or ambulatory experience required [Required]

Additional Information:

  • Completion of a pharmacy technician training program [Preferred]

Licenses and Certifications:
