Job Description:

A Certified Prosthetic Assistant supports the Certified Prosthetist in providing comprehensive prosthetic patient care. Under the guidance and Indirect Supervision of the Certified Prosthetist, assistants may perform prosthetic procedures and related tasks in the management of patient care. This includes fabrication, repairs, and maintenance of devices to provide maximum fit, function and cosmesis that reflect the level of education and training received.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

  • Operate and maintain power equipment including floor grinders, oscillating saws, drills, band saws, and grinders following all manufacturer instructions and company protocols.
  • Mixing/pouring plaster casts, vacuum forming thermoplastic, cutting/grinding prosthetic sockets, assembling prosthetics, and repairing broken prosthetic devices.  
  • Support the prosthetist in managing patient care, including occasional travel to other clinic locations and hospitals.
  • File patient data upon receipt of information.  
  • Performing data entry, copying, faxing, emailing.  
  • Performing other duties as requested.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of prosthetic fabrication techniques, materials, and equipment used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of prosthetic devices.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain fabrication equipment, including grinders, saws, drills, and vacuum forming systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and technical skills to ensure proper fit, function, and cosmetic quality of prosthetic devices.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to support prosthetists, patients, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills with the ability to manage documentation, data entry, and multiple priorities in a clinical and fabrication environment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Certification as a Certified Prosthetic Assistant (CPA) by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pediatric Orthotics (ABC) is required and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience as a Prosthetic Assistant or in a related orthotics/prosthetics role is preferred.
  • Educational requirements include completion of a recognized Prosthetic Assistant training program or equivalent clinical experience as specified by the ABC.
  • Medical Terminology, specifically related to Vascular surgery.
  • Interpersonal/human relations skills, including telephone etiquette.  
  • Organizational skills  
  • Electronic Medical Record data entry  
  • Ability to set priorities while multitasking.  
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality according to HIPAA guidelines.

  • Sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time  
  • Lifting objects, possibly weights more than 30 pounds.  
  • Bending, reaching, and twisting  
  • Ability to assist and support patients in transfer from exam rooms, out of wheelchairs, onto exam tables, during the exam process, etc.  
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus as needed.
