Position Summary

The Business Systems Analyst serves as the primary business liaison for end-to-end processes supporting multiple Commercial product lines, including Enterprise Trading & Risk Management (ETRM), Market Pricing & Rates (MPR), Operational Margin (OM), End Product Sales Forecast (EPSF), and Product Availability & Allocations (PAA). This role partners closely with business leaders, subject matter experts, and technology delivery teams to define and validate business and system requirements, develop business cases, identify process improvement opportunities, and support the successful delivery of technology solutions. The Business Systems Analyst is responsible for driving operational excellence by optimizing business processes, resolving complex system issues, and ensuring Commercial applications effectively support evolving business objectives.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, self-driven professional with strong analytical, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. They will demonstrate the ability to drive process improvements, support organizational change readiness efforts, and deliver solutions that create value across Marathon Petroleum. This role requires collaboration with a diverse range of business functions and stakeholders throughout the organization, serving as a trusted partner between business teams and technology delivery organizations. The candidate will work closely with Product Owners and Product Teams to troubleshoot issues, identify opportunities for enhancement, and advocate for business needs and priorities. Success in this role requires a strong customer-focused mindset, the ability to build effective relationships, and a commitment to working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency, and skill level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides ongoing administration, operational support, and continuous improvement for Commercial application product lines. Partners with internal stakeholders and external support providers to investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve incidents while ensuring reliable application performance and service delivery.
  • Manages the definition of business processes in order to measure, analyze, improve and control the process being reviewed.
  • Communicates effectively with stakeholders, aligning the understanding of requirements, and identifying cross functional changes/impacts of the specifications for solution delivery.
  • Develops recommendations for appropriate systems alternatives and/or enhancements to current systems.
  • Investigates business performance and other measures to gain insight and drive business planning; applies continuous iterative processes.
  • Performs cost benefit and return on investment analyses for proposed systems to aid management in making implementation decisions.
  • Supports implementation of ways to improve working processes in the team.
  • Supports monitoring the execution of IT service management practices around incident, Change, Problem and Solution Development Lifecycle (SDLC) delivery methodologies for improvement and collaboration, including more advanced configuration tasks.
  • Coordinates test case development, execution and support of strategy creation for technology delivery.
  • Plans, executes, and documents user stories, user feedback to support the development of prototypes and wireframes.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems preferred, related field or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience required
  • Experience supporting Commercial applications such as RightAngle, other Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) platforms, Sales Data Flows, Market Pricing and Rates solutions, or similar commercial systems preferred.

  • Business Process Modeling & Redesign - Execution of key business process with the objective of achieving a quantum jump in performance measures such as return on investment (ROI), cost reduction, and quality of service.
  • Change Management – The process of controlled identification, planning and implementation of required initiatives to prepare, support and help individuals, teams and organizations to navigate through change.
  • Continuous Improvement Mindset - Identifies and leads opportunities for continuous improvement and value creation, both incremental and large-scale.
  • Incident Management – Ensuring that any incidents affecting processes and performances of relevant technology services or systems are managed appropriately to mitigate risk and minimize disruption.
  • Quality Assurance (QA) – The process to ensure organizational activities are designed to ensure that an organization is providing the best possible product or service to customers.
  • Requirements Management - The process of documenting, analyzing, tracing, prioritizing and agreeing on requirements and then controlling change while also communicating to relevant stakeholders.
  • Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) - A process used by the software industry to design, develop and test high quality softwares.
  • Specifications Development - Understanding the context, stakeholders and requirements or features of a product or application and detailing the specifications around them.
