This permanent position is based in the Dean's Office, Faculty of Engineering.

Position Summary:

The Buildings & Research Infrastructure Manager provides professional expertise, planning, and oversight for research infrastructure, physical space development, and building operations in the Faculty of Engineering. The incumbent ensures that Faculty buildings, laboratories, and research environments meet University standards for safety, compliance, functionality, and service quality.

 

Working closely with Facilities Management and Ancillary Services (FMAS), Campus Planning & Development Office (CPDO), Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Design Services, Project Management, the Office of the McGill Sustainability Park, and the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR), the incumbent manages infrastructure projects, supports researchers undertaking laboratory renovations, and ensures alignment with Faculty priorities, regulatory requirements, and budget constraints.

 

The role oversees space allocation, building operations, and maintains comprehensive data on Faculty infrastructure needs and priorities.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Faculty-wide planning and management of research infrastructure, laboratory development, and physical space, including space allocation, utilization analysis, renovation planning, and optimization initiatives, ensuring alignment with Faculty priorities and institutional standards.
  • Identify infrastructure and space needs, risks, and opportunities, and provide recommendations to support effective resource allocation, capital planning, and long-term infrastructure development.
  • Oversee Faculty-managed building operations, ensuring effective maintenance, service delivery, operational efficiency, and compliance with University standards.
  • Oversee research infrastructure and renovation projects in collaboration with Principal Investigators, the Project Management Office, and other stakeholders by defining project scope, objectives, timelines, budgets, and deliverables. Oversee progress, manage risks, resolve issues; and ensure timely, cost-effective project completion.
  • Provide expert advice and technical guidance to researchers and Faculty leadership on laboratory design, space planning, infrastructure requirements, project feasibility, and applicable safety, regulatory, and funding agency requirements.
  • Develop, oversee, and analyze project budgets, cost estimates, financial forecasts, and funding requirements, identifying risks and providing recommendations to support informed decision-making.
  • Serve as the primary liaison among researchers, service units, regulatory bodies, funding agencies, and project stakeholders, fostering collaboration and supporting successful infrastructure planning, implementation, reporting, and compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety, environmental, regulatory, and funding agency requirements, including University policies and external regulations, in collaboration with EHS, FMAS, the Fire Prevention Office, the Office of Sponsored Research, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Represent the Faculty on committees and working groups related to laboratory safety, building operations, research infrastructure, and institutional planning priorities.
  • Oversee logistics related to the relocation of Faculty of Engineering researchers to the McGill Sustainability Park (MSP), in collaboration with the MSP team and Director of Administration
  • Supervise and provide leadership to the Building Administrator positions.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Professional designation or undergraduate degree in engineering, architecture, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Several years of relevant experience in a public‑sector or institutional environment.
  • Experience in facilities‑related project management, laboratory infrastructure, and construction practices in Québec.

Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities

  • Strong problem‑solving, negotiation, and diplomatic skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects under pressure.
  • Client‑focused approach with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory infrastructure, safety requirements, and research environments.
  • Familiarity with Québec construction industry practices and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience with project management software.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare budgets, forecasts, and financial analyses.
  • Ability to orchestrate, document, and report on multiple concurrent projects.
  • Fluency in English and French, spoken and written.
