Position Summary

The Assistant Vice President, Inland Marine Underwriting is a senior, market-facing production underwriting role responsible for generating, underwriting, and servicing profitable Inland Marine business. This position plays a key role in expanding MSIG USA's presence within the marketplace by building strong relationships with retail and wholesale brokers, identifying new business opportunities, and delivering underwriting solutions that support profitable growth.

Primary product responsibilities include Contractors Equipment, Motor Truck Cargo, Warehouse Legal Liability, and Miscellaneous Property Floaters.

The successful candidate will possess deep Inland Marine underwriting expertise, established broker relationships, and a proven ability to attract and retain profitable business while serving as a trusted market representative for MSIG.

Essential Functions:

Production, Underwriting & Risk Management (50%)

  • Produce, underwrite, and service profitable Inland Marine business within underwriting authority.
  • Underwrite complex Inland Marine risks, including Contractors Equipment, Motor Truck Cargo, Warehouse Legal Liability, and Miscellaneous Property Floaters.
  • Apply sound underwriting judgment and technical expertise in risk selection, coverage analysis, pricing, aggregate management, and reinsurance considerations.
  • Evaluate exposures, coverage needs, and account characteristics to develop underwriting solutions aligned with company guidelines and profitability objectives.
  • Exercise independent judgment in the evaluation and underwriting of new and renewal business.
  • Monitor underwriting results, loss trends, and market developments to support sound underwriting decisions and profitability objectives.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting documentation and system data in accordance with company standards.
  • Collaborate with claims, actuarial, risk engineering, and other internal stakeholders to support business objectives and deliver exceptional customer service.

Business Development & Distribution Management (40%)

  • Build, maintain, and expand relationships with retail and wholesale brokers to generate profitable new business opportunities.
  • Identify and cultivate strategic producer relationships aligned with MSIG USA's underwriting appetite and growth objectives.
  • Drive new business production through broker engagement, marketing activities, and marketplace presence.
  • Serve as a trusted underwriting resource and market representative for brokers and clients.
  • Successfully manage new and renewal business opportunities while maintaining strong service standards.
  • Represent MSIG at industry events, broker meetings, and trade association functions to strengthen market visibility and distribution relationships.
  • Promote a positive image of MSIG and our Inland Marine capabilities within the marketplace.

Leadership & Strategic Influence (10%)

  • Serve as a technical underwriting resource and mentor to less experienced underwriting staff.
  • Share market insights and underwriting expertise to support the development of team members and underwriting best practices.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives, process improvements, and product development efforts as appropriate.
  • Act as a positive ambassador for MSIG USA internally and externally.

Education & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • CPCU, ARM, AU, or other insurance designations strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of Inland Marine underwriting experience, including production responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated expertise underwriting Contractors Equipment, Motor Truck Cargo, Warehouse Legal Liability, Floaters, and other Inland Marine risks.
  • Strong knowledge of Inland Marine coverages, exposures, risk selection, pricing, and underwriting practices.
  • Proven success generating profitable new business and developing broker relationships within the New York/New Jersey (east coast) market.
  • Established relationships with retail and wholesale brokers preferred.
  • Strong negotiation, relationship management, and business development skills.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and presentation abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively across business functions.

SALARY: The estimated salary range for this position is $175,000 to $215,000 per year. This is a good-faith assessment of the salary range for this position only. In determining the actual salary within this range, MSIG USA will consider a candidate’s relevant experience, location, and other job-related factors.
