JOB PURPOSE

The Beaverton School District's Teaching & Learning Department supports student success through a coordinated system of programs and services, including Equity & Inclusion, Multilingual Services, Special Education, and Student Programs such as AVID. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college and career readiness program that helps students develop academic, organizational, and collaborative skills through elective classes and structured tutorial support. AVID Tutors support the department's mission by facilitating student-led tutorial groups, encouraging inquiry-based learning, helping students strengthen critical thinking skills, and fostering confidence and academic engagement. This position provides valuable experience in education, mentoring, communication, leadership, and group facilitation while building transferable skills that support future career goals and enhance a professional resume.
 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Guide a small group of students through inquiry-based learning by asking probing questions and encouraging critical thinking.

  • Monitor and document student preparation, participation, and progress during Tutorials.

  • Adapt to changing classroom needs and support alternative AVID activities when Tutorials are not scheduled.

  • Maintain accurate records and communicate relevant observations to the AVID teacher.

  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for middle and high school students.

SCHEDULE

  • Up to the college students to tutor in at least one class each week. The list of schools and classes requesting college tutors will be released by the end of September. Please see below for differences between middle school and high school schedules.

  • Middle school 

    • Middle school AVID classes meet every day.

    • AVID classes run for 45 minutes between 9:40AM and 4:15PM.

    • College students can choose one of the options below:

      • Tutor every Tuesday

      • Tutor every Wednesday

      • Tutor every Thursday

      • Tutor two of the days as listed above. 

  • High school

    • High schools run on block scheduling, called A days and B days.

    • College students can choose one of three options:

      • Tutor every other Wednesday each month.

      • Tutor every other Thursday each month. 

      • Tutor every week, alternating between Wednesday and Thursday.

    • AVID classes run for 90 minutes long between 8:30AM and 3:10PM. 

RATE OF PAY

  • $16.80 / hour

WORK STUDY REQUIREMENT

  • Federal Work-Study required

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to build positive relationships with students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Strong active listening skills and patience when working with adolescents.

  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when working with student information.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with classroom teachers and school staff.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently when appropriate.

  • Commitment to creating an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful learning environment.

PREFERENCES

  • Experience working with middle school or high school students in tutoring, mentoring, coaching, camp, volunteer, or classroom settings.

  • Experience facilitating small-group discussions or collaborative learning activities.

  • Familiarity with AVID, college readiness programs, or educational support services.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience through student organizations, athletics, employment, or community involvement.

  • Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus.

    Eligibility to Work
    In order to comply with US Homeland Security Department regulations, all employees must complete an I-9 form in Workday prior to or no later than the first day of work and bring originals (no photocopies) of their supporting documentation to Human Resources no later than the 3rd business day of employment. Failure to have a completed I-9 form on file with the College will result in immediate termination of employment.
