Job Purpose

The Data Café Tutor provides free, drop-in peer tutoring in R coding and related data-science skills for Lewis & Clark students. Tutors help students build confidence and independence in using coding, troubleshoot coding problems, and connect course concepts to practical data analysis. The Data Café is located in the Data Science Center in Watzek Library.


Prerequisites for Eligibility

  • Experience using the R programming language.

  • Strong communication skills and an interest in helping other students learn.

  • Ability to work respectfully and effectively with students from varied academic backgrounds and levels of coding experience.

  • Resume and cover letter submitted with the application.

  • Resume or cover letter must include the name of at least one faculty reference who can speak to the applicant’s experience with R and potential as a tutor.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide drop-in support for R coding and other foundational data-science skills during scheduled Data Café hours.

  • Help students interpret error messages, debug code, work with data, and develop effective problem-solving strategies.

  • Explain concepts in ways that promote student learning and independence rather than simply completing work for students.

  • Assist students with coursework-related questions through individual appointments or email correspondence, as needed.

  • Maintain a welcoming, organized, and inclusive tutoring environment in the Data Science Center.

  • Communicate with the Data Café supervisor about common student needs, resource gaps, and scheduling concerns.

  • Participate in training or meetings as requested by the supervisor.

Rate of pay

  • $16.80 / hour

Schedule

Tutors must be available for some scheduled Data Café hours:

  • 4:00–5:00 p.m., Sunday through Friday

  • 8:00–9:00 p.m., Sunday through Thursday
     

Anticipated hours: approximately 3 hours per week. Some flexibility may be available based on program needs and tutor availability.

Work-Study Requirement

Work-study is not required.

  • In what year do you expect to graduate?

  • How much experience do you have with R? This may include courses, workshops, extracurricular activities, or independent learning.Please describe any tutoring, teaching, mentoring, or peer-support experience you have.

  • Do you have experience with other programming languages, such as Python? If so, please describe it.

    Eligibility to Work
