School Nurse / Principal or Designated Senior Leader

Job Purpose

The Auxiliary Nurse supports the School Nurse in promoting the health, safety, and wellbeing of students and staff. The role includes providing first aid, assisting with the management of medical needs, maintaining accurate health records, and undertaking a range of administrative duties to ensure the efficient operation of the school's medical provision. The post holder will work on a 50% Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) basis and may be required to work flexibly according to the operational needs of the school.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical and Student Care

• Provide first aid and basic nursing care to students, staff, and visitors in accordance with school policies and established procedures.
• Assist the School Nurse in managing students with chronic medical conditions, allergies, and individual healthcare plans.
• Administer medication under the direction of the School Nurse and in line with school policies and legal requirements.
• Monitor students who become unwell during the school day and communicate appropriately with parents or guardians when required.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and well-equipped medical room.
• Ensure adequate stock levels of first aid supplies and medical equipment, reporting shortages as necessary.
• Support health promotion initiatives and wellbeing programmes across the school.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate and confidential student medical records and update electronic health management systems.
• Record all accidents, incidents, treatments, and medication administration in accordance with school procedures.
• Assist in preparing reports, statistics, and documentation relating to student health and wellbeing.
• Schedule medical appointments, vaccinations, health screenings, and follow-up activities when required.
• Support communication with parents, healthcare providers, and external agencies regarding students' medical needs.
• Assist with filing, record management, correspondence, and other administrative tasks within the medical department.
• Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and maintain confidentiality at all times.

General Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with teaching and support staff to promote student welfare.
• Attend relevant training and professional development activities.
• Participate in emergency procedures and provide support during school trips or events where appropriate.
• Carry out any other duties appropriate to the role as reasonably requested by the School Nurse or Senior Leadership Team.

Person Specification

Essential

• Qualification as an Auxiliary Nurse or equivalent healthcare qualification.
• Previous experience working in a healthcare or educational setting.
• Current First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain one).
• Good organisational and administrative skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
• Competent in the use of Microsoft Office and electronic record management systems.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

• Experience working with children or young people.
• Knowledge of safeguarding procedures within an educational environment.
• Experience maintaining medical records using digital management systems.
• Basic knowledge of health promotion and public health initiatives.

Working Pattern: 50% Full-Time Equivalent (FTE), with working hours agreed according to the operational needs of the school.
