Job Summary:  Reporting to the Mechanical Services Manager or designated manager, the Mechanical Technician II will perform proper diagnosis, repairs and maintenance to vehicles as assigned.  Maintain consistently high standards for technical efficiency, make quality repairs and diagnostics while observing all safety requirements.  Perform all duties assigned.  Must know, practice and ensure that company policies and procedures and state or federal laws are followed always.

Function (Department Roles)

The Mechanical Technician II will perform proper diagnosis, repairs and routine maintenance to vehicles as assigned under little or no supervision. The T2 Technician must be assigned to work/train with a T3 or T4 when working a higher classification. Maintain consistently high standards for technical efficiency, make quality repairs and diagnostics while observing all safety requirements.

Purpose (End Results)

This position performs identified maintenance and repair service on different types of vehicles. Task assignments are directed by shop management to encourage development in a productive manner.


Responsibilities and Duties (Key Roles) technician tasks including, but not limited to the following: 

Provide prompt and courteous service:  

    • Demonstrate friendliness and greet every person with whom they come in contact.  
    • Maintain a professional appearance and a neat work environment consistent with the Company’s Policies and Procedures.  
    • Return customer’s vehicles in clean condition with radios, seats, mirrors and other convenience items in the same position as when the customer brought the vehicle in.  No smoking in customer vehicles.

Make sure customers receive prompt, efficient and courteous attention from all employees.  Notify Manager of any delays or discrepancies in repair estimates.  

Resolve any customer complaints in a friendly, courteous manner and advise Management of all serious complaints or incidences. 

Perform assigned diagnostic repair or maintenance to the standards of the service center and factory specifications.  Obtain clearance from Management whenever this cannot be done.

Look up parts to perform the service.  Use parts in stock when possible and notify admins of parts that need to be saved and tagged.

Test and recheck all repairs and road test all comebacks as assigned by the Manager.  Request assistance on repairs or diagnosis as needed.

Properly complete all Repair Orders including notifying admins what needs to be done. 

Assist the Manager in creating a proper estimate by informing them as to discrepancies or abnormalities in time required to perform the service and parts required for the job.  Recommend additional repairs needed or maintenance to the Manager (verbal or written recommendations are required).

Maintain and improve technical expertise through technical bulletins, trade publications and training seminars.

Practice and promote teamwork always.  Set a good personal example of attitude and performance.

Advise the Manager or designee of all equipment breakdowns and maintenance immediately.

Make sure work area conditions do not threaten employee or customer safety.  Keep work area clean and free of clutter.  Sweep and pick up work area daily and dispose of junk parts and their containers appropriately. Respond to and follow proper procedures on employee and customer accidents, injuries, and loss or damage to any property.  Report all incidents to the Manager or designee.  

Qualifications (Education and Experience):

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Must be able to perform all lower classifications, (Mechanic Tech I)
  • Required – Two (2) of three (3) Certifications A-4, A-5 or A-7
  • Require two (2) to three (3) years of experience in the field or a related area. 
  • Must be qualified to operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to drive vehicles with either standard or automatic transmissions.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to Company policies in all areas.
  • Effective Interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to interact positively with others
  • Computer literacy preferred

Major Activities:

  • Skill Area: A/C & Heater
  • Operate the system and recognize if the system is cooling or not (PM related)
  • Perform basic system checks such as power to compressor, visual inspection of condenser, belt tension, etc.
  • Identify Freon and oil leaks

  • Skill Area: Brakes-Air
  • Identify components of air brake system
  • Operate brakes and identify irregular noises, air leaks 
  • Perform simple air system tests
  • Measure lining thickness
  • Adjust brakes 
  • Measure drums, rotors, cam braking

Skill Area Brakes: Hydraulic

  • Road test for proper operation
  • Make visual inspections for leaks
  • Check park brake operation
  • Check fluid level
  • Measure lining thickness
  • Adjust service brakes
  • Perform brake repair 
  • Adjust park Brakes

 

  • Skill Area: Charging Systems (electrical)
  • Visually inspect batteries
  • Clean connections
  • Check condition of belts
  • Test batteries
  • Check alternator mounting and pulley
  • Replace and adjust belts
  • Perform basic charging system check

 

  • Skill Area: Clutch
  • Lubricate throw-out bearing, linkage, shafts and cables
  • Identify proper clutch operation
  • Identify proper clutch brake operation

 

  • Skill Area: Cooling Systems
    • Check and adjust coolant levels
  • Visually inspect system for leaks
  • Make minor repairs such as hose replacements, fan shrouds, leaking fittings
  • Recognize permanent antifreezes and their requirements
  • Use refractometer
  • Use pressure tester
  • Flush and refill systems

 

  • Skill Area: Cranking System (electrical)
    • Inspect and test batteries
    • Visually inspect cables and cranking motor
    • Clean the battery cables, connections and starter 
    • Replace batteries
    • Charge and check batteries
    • Replace or repair defective cables

 

  • Skill Area: Lighting System and Electrical Accessories
    • Repair minor wiring problems
    • Replace bulbs, lenses and simple light assembles
    • Repair minor lighting problems
    • Replace and adjust sealed beams
    • Install or replace accessories such as heated mirrors, fans, and spotlights

  • Skill Area: Drive Axles
    • Inspect housings for leaks
    • Change oil and filter, if required, and clean breathers

  • Skill Area: Driveline
    • Lubricate drive line
    • Inspect components for wear or damage

 

  • Skill Area: Gas Engines – All Engines
    • Check and adjust oil levels
    • Identify unusual noises, oil leaks

 

  • Skill Area: Fuel Systems
    • Replace and prime fuel filter
    • Check gas and diesel fuel system components such as fuel lines, pickup tubes, return lines, etc. for proper integrity and condition.

 

  • Skill Area: Preventive Maintenance
    • Proper lube techniques
    • Minimal tire inspection
    • Brake check/applied stroke
    • Battery check
    • Under vehicle check/check/lose components
    • Initial Fault code identification

 

  • Skill Area: Tire and Wheel Maintenance
    • Perform air pressure checks
    • Check tread depth
    • Identify tires that need to be changed or repaired
    • Perform tire P.M. Checks
    • Replace tire and wheel assembles
    • Mount/dismount and rotate tires
    • Perform tire/wheel checks/repairs 

 

Mechanic Tech I -  Responsibilities and Duties

  7. Perform light mechanical, tire and inspection services to the standards of the Mechanic Shop.  
  8. Inform the Mechanical Services Manager or designee when a job is started, finished, interrupted or delayed.  Keep the Manager informed as to the progress and/or problems with work load.  Request assistance with repairs or inspections as needed.
  9. Look up parts to perform the service; use parts in stock when possible and communicate with admins of items needed.
  10. Properly complete all work orders.  Check off each job and return the work order to the Manager if all work has been completed.
  11. Recommend additional repairs needed or maintenance to the Manager (verbal or written recommendations are required).

  • Must have the ability to interact positively with others
  • Computer skills preferred 
  • Customer interaction is required

Major Activities:

  • Will perform tire service, including proper entry on repair orders, parts stocking, mounting and dismounting of assembled wheels on vehicles.
  • Will be responsible for the Company’s Tire program at the employee’s assigned locations.
  • Will assist with tire inventory, stocking levels, ordering inventory and maintaining customer specific tire matrix.
  • Oil changes, brakes, hoses, belts, 
  • Light bulb change and Misc.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to Company policies in all areas
  • Effective interpersonal communications skills
  • Must have the ability to interact positively with others

Note: This position will not perform any major mechanical or structural repair work.

Physical Requirements:

The physical activity requirements of the position are from Medium to Heavy Physical Work.  

  • Constant – standing, watching, touching and fingering, listening
  • Frequent – walking, talking, reaching, feeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, kneeling, stooping, crouching, lifting
  • Occasional – climbing, balancing, crawling
  • Potential – running, jumping, yelling, or other rapid or forceful movement in emergency situations

Physical Working Condition:
This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental working conditions, including temperature changes, outside weather conditions, slightly elevated ambient noise levels, minor potential physical hazards, such as electrical current , moving mechanical parts, exposure to hot equipment and cleaning and pesticide chemicals; and minor atmospheric conditions affecting skin or respiratory systems, such as fumes, odors and dusts associated with internal and external service station/convenience food and petroleum dispensing operations..
