Position Description

The McGill University Department of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical) based at the St. Mary’s Hospital Centre. This will be a three-year, renewable Contract Academic Staff appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Pediatrics is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals.  At St. Mary's Hospital Center in Montreal, the intermediate care neonatology nursery provides Level IIA (Level 2a) neonatal care services. This specialized nursery is designed for close medical monitoring of newborns who require extra supervision but do not need full tertiary critical care or intensive care.   The St. Mary's Hospital Center (SMH) is a teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.

As a key academic healthcare institution, the SMH is dedicated to excellence in patient care, education, and research. Situated in Montreal's vibrant West Island region, the hospital offers a dynamic environment for clinical practice and medical training.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will join the Department of Pediatrics and will provide care primarily for healthy newborns, working alongside a skilled team of obstetricians, nurses, and allied health professionals. The successful candidate will also be a clinical leader in managing infants who require additional support, from delivery room resuscitation to stabilization and transfer to tertiary care when necessary. For infants with complex conditions or requiring subspecialty input, we benefit from excellent collaboration with tertiary centers, particularly the Montreal Children’s Hospital and the Jewish General Hospital.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide comprehensive care to newborns in a Level 2A nursery.
  • Collaborate closely with obstetrical, nursing, and allied healthcare professionals to ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Participate in a shared on-call schedule averaging 6-7 shifts per month, including daytime hospital coverage and overnight telephone coverage from home, with the ability to return to the hospital when required for emergencies.
  • Conduct outpatient follow-up assessments for newborns during their first week of life.
  • Respond promptly to neonatal and newborn-related emergencies within the hospital setting.
  • Provide occasional clinical coverage at affiliated network hospitals, including Lakeshore General Hospital and LaSalle Hospital, to support continuity of care across the Montreal West Island Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre network.

The successful candidate is expected to perform clinical duties and attend departmental and division meetings. The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.
