Position Summary

The automotive instructor will teach 30 pay hours per year of assigned classes and perform instructional duties in diverse learning environments. Responsibilities will include following the CDX Learning System by designing and preparing course assignments according to the Automotive Service of Excellence Standards (ASE) and the programs accreditations agreement. Maintaining accurate grading, tracking student work, attendance and assessing student placement in Canvas on a daily and weekly basis. Maintaining scheduled office hours, meeting with students and providing academic advisement to students in the Automotive Program and related areas. Provide mentoring and guidance to adjunct faculty and assist with student conferences when necessary.

It is expected that faculty will maintain current professional standards, ASE Certifications in classes that are being taught, as well as participate in committee/department meetings when possible, and support the mission of SFCC and the School of Trades, Advanced Technologies & Sustainability. Must be committed to serving a diverse college community.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Teach up to 15 pay hours each semester (fall and spring semesters) for a total of 30 pay hours per year.
• Provides classroom and online instruction in the CDX Learning System along with Canvas. 
• Assignments for must follow the approved course syllabus.
• Creates and maintains effective, student-centered, learning environments.
• Advises students concerning academic achievement and learning goals; assists students with enrollment, registration and navigating systems.
• Works with Counseling/Accessibility Services and the Tutoring Center, making referrals as necessary.
• Acquaints students with course content, requirements, grading procedures, and attendance policy.
• Maintains student records regarding grades, coursework, degree plans and petitions to graduate.
• Maintains and submits up-to-date course outlines, syllabi and assessments using ASE Task Sheets.
• Submits required reports by deadlines.
• Seeks ways to improve instruction, keeping abreast of professional education developments.
• Maintains approved schedule of office hours.
• Participates in curriculum development when necessary.
• Create curriculum and assessment instruments employing multiple assessment techniques.
• Integrates appropriate technology and diversity throughout the courses.
• Selects materials and methods for faculty to use in teaching and assessing courses.
• Assists in the choice of textbooks and other instructional materials that are appropriate to the course syllabi.
• Participates in faculty, department, School, college-wide and other meetings and functions; serves on college committees; and attends and supports college activities.
• Promotes program within SFCC and to the community.
• Works with the Office of Recruitment and Outreach to promote SFCC and the Automotive programs to the community.
• Participate/Coordinate with established automotive advisory committee.
• Works with businesses and related industries in the Santa Fe area to develop strong relationships, career paths initiatives, internships and workforce development.
• Encourage students enrollment in internships and other employment opportunities.
• Mentor and observe adjunct faculty.
• Collaborates with other faculty and staff at SFCC along with the School of Trades, Advanced Technologies & Sustainability.  Assumes special duties assigned by the Dean and/or Associate Dean of the School representatives.
• Provide hands-on training and lead Automotive Technology classes using an established curriculum that strictly follows ASE Standards.
• Simulate real-life scenarios in our fully equipped facility, ensuring students gain practical, industry-relevant experience.
• Teach students the critical importance of safety and compliance within the automotive shop environment.
• Create and maintain effective, student-centered learning environments.
• Integrate diversity, inclusion, and appropriate technology throughout all course materials and methods.
• Support and motivate students’ growth, professionalism, and accountability to prepare them for the workforce.
• Prepare students for a successful career by working with local businesses and industry partners to develop career paths, internships, and workforce initiatives.
• Advise students concerning academic achievement and learning goals, including assistance with enrollment and registration.
• Maintain an approved schedule of office hours for student consultation.
• Identify student needs and make referrals to Counseling/Accessibility Services and the Tutoring Center as necessary.
• Evaluate and communicate progress with students through regular tracking of work and attendance.
• Maintain and submit up-to-date course outlines and syllabi while conducting assessments using ASE Task Sheets.
• Maintain accurate student records regarding grades, coursework, and petitions to graduate.
• Select textbooks and instructional materials that are appropriate to course syllabi and CDX standards.
• Submit all required administrative reports by established deadlines.
• Mentor and observe adjunct faculty, providing guidance on instructional strategies and assisting with student conferences when needed.
• Participate with the established automotive advisory committee to ensure program relevancy.
• Participate in faculty, school, and college-wide meetings and committees.
• Promote the Automotive Program to the community and work with the Office of Recruitment and Outreach to enhance enrollment.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff within the School of Trades, Advanced Technologies & Sustainability.
• Seek continuous improvement in instruction by staying informed of professional education developments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Current and demonstrated knowledge in applicable course content.
• Knowledge of current teaching methodologies and practices, such as cooperative learning, service-learning, traditional and alternative assessment.
• Knowledge of on-line and blended course delivery; diverse learning styles; evaluation methodologies; record keeping; and of curriculum design and planning.
• Must possess strong oral and written communication skills.
• Skill in problem solving; in time management; in computer use; in listening and in critical thinking.
• Must have sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, special needs, and ethnic backgrounds of college students.
• Ability to communicate information and ideas; speak clearly; work with students with learning differences and disabilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Associate Degree in Automotive Technologies.
• Five (5) years automotive technology experience that includes a combination of industry experience and at least two (2) years of teaching experience in a post-secondary setting.
• Required education may be substituted for relevant experience on a year-to-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Automotive Technology, Career and Technical Education, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
• Experience in curriculum development, online and technology enriched teaching and student advising.
• Experience in teacher mentoring and strong record of continuing professional development.
• Experience teaching in a multicultural setting.
• ASE Advanced Level Specialist Certifications (L1, L3 or equivalent).
• Current ASE Certifications A1 through A8.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

• Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
• Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
• Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing/walking for more than four(4) hours a day.
• Moderate physical activity.

Schedule Designation:

• Typically, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. May be required to work after-hours and/or weekends.
• This role is required to work onsite in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
