About the role

The Role of the Assistant Director of Engineering

Following the development of Four Seasons Resort Zanzibar, we are preparing to open an exceptional new resort and are seeking an Assistant Director of Engineering to join our pre-opening team and play a key role in bringing the property to life.

Reporting to the Four Seasons Design Services Project Lead during the pre-opening phase, you will serve as the On-Site Lead (OSL) for Four Seasons Resort Zanzibar, supporting the successful handover, testing and commissioning, quality assurance, defect rectification and operational readiness of the property.

Once the Resort is operational, the role will transition to reporting to the Director of Engineering, supporting the day-to-day Engineering operation, team leadership, maintenance standards, safety, asset care and overall Engineering readiness of the Resort. The job description therefore covers both the pre-opening OSL responsibilities and the ongoing Assistant Director of Engineering responsibilities following opening.

Pre-Opening & On-Site Lead Responsibilities:

During the pre-opening phase, the Assistant Director of Engineering will serve as the On-Site Lead (OSL) for Four Seasons Resort Zanzibar, acting as the primary Four Seasons site representative for Engineering and project delivery matters.

In this capacity, the role will support Four Seasons Design Services, the Project Team and Resort Leadership Team in ensuring a smooth transition from project completion to operational readiness. This includes supporting the handover, testing and commissioning, quality assurance, defect rectification, closeout and operational readiness processes, while ensuring that Four Seasons standards and requirements are understood and appropriately implemented.

The Assistant Director of Engineering will coordinate and follow up with Owner representatives, contractors and project stakeholders on matters including handover inspections, functional testing, systems and equipment commissioning, technical documentation, deficiency rectification, design change requests, attic stock, closeout documentation and other project handover requirements.

The role will also support the Resort Engineering team through deep cleaning, sleep testing, operational testing and readiness activities, helping ensure that the property is prepared to deliver a seamless guest experience from opening day.

Following the opening of the Resort, the position will transition into a traditional Assistant Director of Engineering role, supporting the Director of Engineering in the leadership and operation of the Resort's Engineering function.

Assistant Director of Engineering Key Responsibilities:

• Support the Director of Engineering in leading the daily Engineering operation, including team priorities, shift handovers, urgent defects, planned maintenance, safety concerns and overall operational readiness.
• Coordinate and support Engineering managers, shift engineers, technicians, coordinators, contractors and vendors, providing guidance, coaching and follow-up within the approved scope of authority.
• Take ownership of guest-impacting Engineering priorities across guest rooms, public areas, restaurants and bars, spa, pool and beach areas, back-of-house spaces, plant rooms and other resort environments.
• Conduct regular property walks and inspections to assess technical quality, maintenance standards, completion status and operational readiness.
• Identify and follow up on recurring defects, outstanding works and areas requiring additional attention, ensuring appropriate escalation where required.
• Support the visibility and execution of preventive maintenance programs, asset care, minor works and Engineering projects.
• Monitor contractor attendance, performance, work quality, material readiness and compliance with agreed requirements.
• Promote a strong safety culture and support Fire & Life Safety readiness, safe work practices, permit controls and compliance with Four Seasons policies and procedures.

Our Ideal Assistant Director of Engineering Candidate will have:

• A relevant engineering qualification, technical diploma, trade or facilities management background, or equivalent hotel Engineering leadership experience.
• Previous pre-opening experience, ideally within luxury hotels or resorts, with exposure to project handover, testing, commissioning and operational readiness.
• Experience in luxury hospitality, resort Engineering, facilities, building services and maintenance, with strong contractor and project coordination skills.
• Proven leadership experience in coordinating Engineering teams, technicians, contractors and vendors.
• Working knowledge of preventive maintenance, HotSOS / CMMS, technical records, safe work practices and Fire & Life Safety requirements.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with excellent command of English; additional languages are an advantage.
• A hands-on, proactive and solutions-oriented leadership style, with strong attention to detail, sound judgment and a passion for service and team development.
