Our commitment to inclusion and fairness
We believe everyone should have a fair opportunity to contribute, succeed, and reach their full potential. That means ensuring everyone is heard, respected, and valued, while identifying and removing barriers that may get in the way. Our commitment is to be an employer role model, grounded in inclusion and fairness for all.
We want every application to receive fair and thoughtful consideration; therefore, all applications are reviewed by a member of our recruitment team, not by AI.
The role
The Financial Times is looking for a smart and energetic business editor to join the Companies desk in London. This is an important role on the desk, helping steer the coverage of key sectors, ensure the smooth running of the desk and editing some of our highest profile stories, whether splash-worthy scoops or corporate deep dives.
This person will be liaising with correspondents around the world, helping steer coverage of everything from banks and oil majors, to carmakers, luxury giants and defence start-ups. This is a wide-ranging job, where a good command of corporate reporting, smart news judgement and the ability to make complicated stories sing are essential.
Business knowledge and a reporting background are important qualifications. This person needs to be able to confidently handle longer investigative stories and take care of legally contentious pieces.
Key responsibilities
- Commission sharp news stories and original analysis in conjunction with other editors
- Help maintain a healthy pipeline of scoops and reads that will populate prime slots on the homepage
- Edit copy so stories have appropriate length, pace and punch
- Closely co-ordinate with other desks, especially New York, Hong Kong and Markets
- Project stories to the main news desk with smart headlines and strong graphics to maximise their audience
- Work on longer term data projects with the long form and visual journalism teams
- Weekend and some early morning shifts are required as part of the team rota
What we are looking for
The right candidate will be news driven, a team player and will ideally have been an accomplished reporter and writer of corporate stories. Good communication and planning skills are essential. This editor must be comfortable exercising editorial judgement on legally contentious stories and be experienced working to tight deadlines and producing stories very quickly on breaking news. Experience editing long form would also be a plus.
Please submit your application by the end of the day, Sunday 22nd November 2026.
The use of AI
Original reporting, great writing and intelligent commentary lie at the heart of FT journalism. Our readers trust us to produce quality journalism that is accurate, fair and insightful. This is why FT editorial staff do not by default use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to write articles or create other reader-facing content. For specific and pre-approved cases, AI can be harnessed for certain tasks, such as assisting data research for investigations.
We expect applicants to the FT newsroom to refrain from using AI in their test submissions, and any written materials should be a genuine reflection of their own knowledge, skills and experiences. We encourage candidates only to employ AI as a tool to help with research and interview readiness for a role.
Candidates should be aware that the use of AI throughout the application process is monitored to ensure a fair and transparent hiring process for all.
