About the Opportunity

The Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University has multiple tenure-track/tenured faculty positions at all ranks (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Full Professor), beginning academic year 2027-28 or 2028-29.  The tenure home for this position will reside in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences, with a potential joint appointment in another Northeastern College (Bouvé College of Health Sciences; College of Art, Media, and Design; College of Engineering; College of Science; College of Social Sciences and Humanities; D'More-McKim School of Business; Mills College; School of Law), to be determined in consultation with the successful candidate.  Academic rank at the Associate Professor and Full Professor levels will be commensurate with experience and qualifications reflecting a record of demonstrated teaching and scholarly excellence.

We will consider candidates across all areas of computer science, whose research connects to the following sub-areas of AI:

• Physical AI: Designing AI systems that sense, reason and act within real-world environments. Areas of interest include machine perception and multimodal sensing, embodied and egocentric AI, world models and planning, wearable and interactive systems, robot manipulation and mobility, multi-agent systems and safe human-robot collaboration, and assistive and rehabilitation technologies for clinical, home, and community settings.
• Human Centered AI: Designing, building, and evaluating interactive AI systems that augment human agency, creativity, collaboration, while accounting for their societal, cognitive, and economic impacts. Areas of interest include human-AI interaction, co-creation and AI-supported work; human control over generative and agentic AI systems; human-centered explainability and decision-making; community-centered technologies as well as critical AI for the public good. We welcome a broad range of research approaches.
• AI and Software Engineering: Studying software engineering, programming languages, and formal methods for the robustness, performance, correctness, and security of code generated by AI or interacting with AI. Areas of interest include the coordination and validation of concurrent AI agents acting on shared code at ecosystem scale, and the engineering of AI-based systems.
• AI Safety, Security and Alignment: Ensuring that increasingly capable AI systems remain safe, reliable, interpretable, and aligned with human intent. Areas of interest include formal foundations of alignment, scalable AI oversight and control, interpretability, adversarial robustness, auditing and red teaming AI models, formal verification of AI systems, provenance of AI-generated content, privacy-preserving learning, agentic AI security and privacy, and cryptographic techniques for AI security.

We will begin reviewing applications as soon as they are received, starting November 15, 2026, and continuing through the academic year until the search is completed.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in AI, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Science and related areas, mentoring students and postdoctoral researchers, conducting an independent research program that attracts external funding, and service to the college, university and the profession.

Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science or a related field from an accredited institution by their employment start date.  Candidates are expected to develop an independently funded research program of international caliber.  Candidates should also have demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern University education.  Senior candidates must have an established history of grant support or industry research, with the potential for strong leadership in their research field.  For Associate Professor appointments, at least five years of related experience is required by employment start date.  For Full Professor level appointments, at least eight years of related experience is required by employment start date.

Northeastern University is a global university system.  In addition to Boston, Khoury College currently offers programs in Arlington (VA), Miami, New York, Oakland, Portland (ME), Seattle, Silicon Valley, Vancouver and London.  Positions will primarily be on the Boston, Oakland, and Arlington campuses but the candidate may indicate their interest in other campuses.

Khoury College has a diverse tenured/tenure-track faculty of 113 and it offers a broad array of research and educational opportunities to students. Since 2012, the college has hired 174 outstanding tenured/tenure-track and full-time-non-tenure-track faculty members and plans to continue this strategic growth in the coming years. Faculty research spans all areas of computing and is interdisciplinary across seven of Northeastern’s colleges; 44 of the 113 tenured/tenure-track faculty have joint appointments with other academic departments, including Electrical and Computer Engineering, Art and Design, Health Sciences, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Philosophy and Religion, Business, Mathematics, and Law. Khoury faculty members are integral to Northeastern University’s multidisciplinary institutes including the Network Science Institute, the Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute, the Institute for Experiential Robotics, and the Institute of Experiential Artificial Intelligence.

The college offers three core undergraduate degrees (Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity); eleven MS degrees (Computer Science, Health Informatics, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Game Science and Design, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Complex Network Analysis, Statistics, Extended and Virtual Reality, and Internet of Things), and four PhD degrees (Computer Science, Network Science, Personal Health Informatics, and Cybersecurity). Many of these are interdisciplinary degrees with other Colleges at Northeastern.

Khoury College is committed to broadening participation in CS to increase diversity of thought and demographics.  For undergraduates, Khoury offers over 60 combined majors (CS+X) and works closely with the Center for Inclusive Computing, which has the mission to broaden participation in undergraduate computing programs nationally. At the graduate level Khoury is now scaling its successful Align MS in CS program for people who did not study CS as an undergraduate. This includes building a consortium of universities in the U.S. to offer similar programs.
