PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The city of Aurora's Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Department's mission is to encourage active lifestyles and create healthy environments for people, nature and community. 

The award-winning operation consists of seven divisions (Golf, Open Space and Natural Resources, Parks Operations, Planning, Design and Construction, Recreation, Business Services and Communications) that collectively manage more than 8,000 acres of open space, 100+ parks, 180+ athletic fields, over 100 miles of trails, three nature centers, two reservoirs, five recreation centers, five golf courses, indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and one of Colorado's largest municipal urban forestry programs.

The hiring range for this role is $21.52 - $26.89/hour

Salary to be commensurate with experience.

Position Overview

The purpose of the Aquatic Maintenance Technician role is to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of aquatic facilities through routine maintenance, repair, and monitoring of pools, mechanical systems, and facility equipment. This role maintains water quality and regulatory compliance, performs preventative maintenance, and helps ensure facilities are functional and safe for public use.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists work crews in the installation, repair and maintenance of swimming pools and related equipment and aquatic facilities.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance inspections of equipment
  • Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment
  • Maintains and repairs tools and equipment
  • Vacuums pool floors, skim debris, scrub tile lines, and maintain surrounding deck areas
  • Maintains and/or coordinates services on pool heating systems, pumps, motors, filters, chemical injectors, and chemical controllers
  • Calibrates and repairs all chemical and water related aquatic equipment such as water flow meters and valves and performs proper backwashing procedures
  • Procures necessary supplies and equipment as needed for projects
  • Perform regular water testing and chemical balancing to ensure safe and hygienic water conditions
  • Makes routine plumbing, fixture, referring major system needs to others. Cleans and repairs drains, sometimes requiring the need to dive and perform underwater maintenance
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education: 

  • High school diploma or GED

Experience: 

  • 2 years of experience in aquatics maintenance or related field

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Colorado Driver’s license with a good driving history
  • Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facilities Operator within six months of hire
  • CPR/First Aid/AED/BBP certifications within six months of hire

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of practices, procedures, equipment and systems related pool maintenance

Skills: 

  • Skill in performing tool and equipment maintenance activities
  • Adjusting equipment appropriately
  • Using supplies safely and efficiently
  • Transporting and operating equipment safely

Abilities: 

  • Understand verbal and written instructions
  • Able to work independently and with limited supervision

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent physical work
  • May require the ability to lift a maximum of 80 pounds with assistance
  • May lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Frequent walking and standing
  • Frequent performance of activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and climbing
  • Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of tools, equipment and vehicles
  • Vision to read manuals, record data, monitor/observe instruments and gauges
  • Hearing/listening for troubleshooting and warning signals
  • Speech communication to provide technical information and to communicate with employees and citizens

Work Environment:

  • Works both indoors and outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions, noise, fumes, and chemicals
  • Work may be performed in a confined space
  • Handles a variety of chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, and concrete and building material common to maintenance and construction

Equipment Used:

  • Operates a variety of tools, equipment, and vehicles common to maintenance and construction. 
  • Operates computers and irrigation controls.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.

Safety sensitive positions include Civil Service positions within Police and Fire Departments and positions where their job responsibilities have direct and substantial responsibility that would impact the health and safety of others.
