APPLIED MECHANICS POSITION

NAC International, a global provider of nuclear fuel cycle management solutions and consulting services, is seeking a talented and motivated Applied Mechanics Engineer to join our team at our Peachtree Corners, Georgia headquarters. The ideal candidate is an analytical problem-solver with strong engineering fundamentals, sound technical judgment, and a passion for developing innovative solutions to complex mechanical challenges. This hybrid position offers the flexibility to work both on-site and remotely.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Working alongside a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will perform and document advanced applied mechanics evaluations supporting the design, licensing, qualification, and operation of radioactive material (e.g. high-level radioactive waste, used and fresh nuclear fuel, etc.) transportation, storage, transfer, and handling systems. Responsibilities include nonlinear transient analyses using the explicit finite element code LS-DYNA, structural evaluations using ANSYS, development of engineering methodologies, support of licensing activities with relevant competent authorities (e.g. US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), US Department of Energy, (DOE), Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), etc.), and technical interaction with clients, regulators, and multidisciplinary engineering teams. Analyses are performed in accordance with applicable design specifications, quality assurance requirements, regulatory requirements, and industry codes and standards.

WHAT YOU’LL OWN:

You will be responsible for developing and executing applied mechanics analyses; preparing calculation packages, technical reports, and licensing documentation; performing independent technical reviews of engineering work; supporting system design optimization and qualification; and maintaining complete and accurate engineering records. The position requires application of sound engineering judgment and effective communication of technical results to internal and external stakeholders. The Applied Mechanics Engineer is expected to independently plan, execute, document, and defend complex technical work while contributing to the development of engineering methodologies and best practices.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Develop and execute applied mechanics analyses supporting the development, licensing, and deployment of nuclear transportation, storage, transfer, and handling systems.
  • Develop finite element models and analytical methodologies for structural and dynamic evaluations.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, and licensing documentation.
  • Support NRC licensing activities, including SAR development and regulatory responses.
  • Evaluate designs for compliance with applicable requirements, codes, and standards.
  • Perform verification, validation, benchmarking, and independent technical reviews.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide engineering recommendations.
  • Develop analysis automation tools, workflows, and process improvements.
  • Interface with customers, regulators, suppliers, and multidisciplinary project teams on technical matters.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and support for junior engineers.
  • Perform other engineering duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

Education

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, applied mechanics, or in a relevant engineering discipline required, Ph. D. preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience performing finite element analyses (Ansys preferred), including nonlinear simulations.
  • Minimum three (3) years of demonstrated experience with explicit FEA using LS-DYNA.
  • Experience in developing and evaluating finite element models for complex structural systems.
  • Experience in supporting engineering design, qualification, or licensing activities within regulated industries.
  • Nuclear industry experience is preferred.

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of solid mechanics, structural dynamics for both seismic and impact applications, finite element methods (both implicit and explicit), and engineering design principles.
  • Familiarity with ASME, ANSI, ASTM, AWS, AISC, and other related engineering codes and standards.
  • Familiarity with NRC regulations, guidance documents, and licensing processes is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of engineering verification, validation, benchmarking, and quality assurance practices.

Software Skills

  • LS-DYNA required.
  • LS-PrePost required.
  • Ansys Mechanical / Mechanical APDL required.
