The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

This position is located at Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Alexander Correctional is a closed-custody male facility with 1,252 bed capacity.

Positions in this class are characterized by their performance of a variety of administrative, clerical, and office support duties. Duties performed may include preparation of documents and reports, composition of memos and letters, the use of office technology, compiling records, organizing and maintaining files, posting information, greeting, referring, assisting visitors, clients, staff, and others, mail distribution, and photocopying. Positions may serve as the primary staff assistant to a department or program manager. Positions may serve as an office coordinator for a work unit.

Key Job Duties:

•Reporting to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager, this position will provide clerical support services to the facility. Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
•Answering phones and responding to questions from staff and offenders
•Preparing, typing, entering, filing, and maintaining monthly reports and records.
Using Microsoft Word, Excel, email, databases
•Processing incoming mail.
•Making copies, scanning documents, and maintaining office files.
•Preparing reports, logs, forms, and other documentation.
•Providing clerical support to supervisors and other prison staff.
•Working with deadlines while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Range; $31,200-$51,249 Salary Grade:NC02

Veterans’ and National Guard Preference

Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214 Member-4 Form (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to their applications.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application, if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing. 

Applicants who are former members of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service, must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22, along with the state application.

Minimum Education and Experience
