Position Summary
Adjunct Instructor positions are temporary, part-time positions hired on an as-needed basis to support workforce and
skills training initiatives. The Adjunct Industrial Maintenance Instructor will create a hands-on learning environment that
supports adult learners in developing practical maintenance, troubleshooting, and technical skills aligned with modern
manufacturing and industry needs.
This role focuses on delivering non-credit industrial maintenance training for workforce development. Training may range
from foundational maintenance skills to advanced technical topics based on instructor expertise and employer needs.
Instructors may teach at Ivy Tech Community College - Richmond or onsite at employer locations throughout the
surrounding service area. Applicants are not required to have expertise in every industrial maintenance discipline.
Instructors may be selected to teach courses within their specific area(s) of professional expertise.

Major Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality, hands-on industrial maintenance training in classroom, lab, and employer-site settings.

• Facilitate adult learning through demonstrations, equipment exercises, troubleshooting scenarios, and practical applications.

• Provide or assist with course outlines, instructional materials, lab activities, and assessments aligned with workforce training objectives.

• Adapt instruction to participants with varying levels of industrial experience and technical knowledge.

• Maintain accurate attendance, progress, assessment, and course-completion records.

• Submit required course documentation within established timelines.

• Support participants with questions and technical skill development throughout training.

• Address participant concerns and collaborate with Ivy Tech Workforce/Skills Training staff as needed.

• Meet all scheduled training sessions as assigned.

• Utilize instructional technologies such as PowerPoint, Canvas, simulation software, or manufacturer-specific training platforms when appropriate.

• Promote a professional, respectful, inclusive, and safety-focused learning environment.

• Ensure the safe use of tools, equipment, trainers, and laboratory resources. Industrial Maintenance Training Areas Qualified instructors may teach in one or more of the following areas based on their experience and expertise:

• Industrial Maintenance Fundamentals

• Preventive and Predictive Maintenance

• Mechanical Systems and Troubleshooting

• Industrial Electrical Fundamentals

• Electrical Troubleshooting

• Motors, Motor Controls, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

• Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)

• Siemens and/or Allen-Bradley PLC Systems • Industrial Robotics • FANUC Robot Operations and Programming

• Hydraulics and Pneumatics • Pumps, Bearings, Belts, Chains, and Power Transmission Systems

• Industrial Troubleshooting and Root Cause Analysis

• Industrial Safety and Lockout/Tagout

• Mechatronics and Automated Manufacturing Systems

• Other industrial maintenance and advanced manufacturing topics based on employer needs Instructors may also assist in developing or customizing short-term training for employer partners based on specific equipment, processes, or workforce skill gaps

Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant hands-on industrial maintenance, manufacturing, automation, electrical, mechanical, robotics, or related technical experience.

• Demonstrated expertise in at least one industrial maintenance or advanced manufacturing discipline.

• Strong understanding of applicable industrial safety practices.

• Ability to explain technical concepts clearly and translate industry experience into practical, hands-on instruction.

• Ability to effectively work with adult learners with varying levels of experience.

• Ability to demonstrate proper troubleshooting, maintenance, and/or equipment-operation techniques within the instructor's area of expertise. • High school diploma or equivalent with substantial relevant industry experience required. Preferred Qualifications

• Associate's degree or higher in Industrial Technology, Advanced Manufacturing, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Automation, or a related field.

• Previous experience as an industrial maintenance technician, maintenance supervisor, controls technician, automation technician, engineer, skilled tradesperson, or similar role.

• Prior teaching, technical training, apprenticeship, mentoring, or workforce-development experience.

• Manufacturer-specific training or certifications related to PLCs, robotics, automation, electrical systems, mechanical systems, or industrial equipment.

• Industry-recognized credentials such as OSHA, NFPA 70E, NCCER, MSSC, SACA, FANUC, Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or other relevant credentials.

• Experience developing or delivering customized employer-based technical training.

• Experience troubleshooting industrial equipment in a manufacturing environment.

Work Environment

This is a part-time, as-needed adjunct position. Training schedules vary based on employer and program needs and may include daytime, evening, or occasional weekend instruction. A significant portion of workforce training may occur during normal daytime business hours, particularly when training employees for local manufacturing partners. Instruction may take place at Ivy Tech Community College - Richmond or onsite at employer facilities. Local travel may be required. Course assignments will be based on the instructor's qualifications, technical expertise, availability, and employer training needs.
