The Department of Teaching and Learning Sciences (TLS) seeks qualified adjunct faculty to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in educator preparation programs leading to Florida educator certification, including but not limited to Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Mathematics Education, Secondary Biology Education, Secondary Social Science Education, and Exceptional Student Education.

Adjunct faculty are expected to provide high-quality instruction, foster student success, model professionalism, and contribute to the preparation of effective educators. Instruction may occur in face-to-face, hybrid, online, laboratory, clinical, and field-based settings on the main campus or at off-campus instructional sites.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Adjunct faculty are responsible for the following duties, as assigned:

Teaching and Instruction

  • Teach assigned undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Develop and maintain course syllabi consistent with university, college, department, accreditation, and state requirements.
  • Prepare engaging instructional materials and learning experiences aligned with course learning outcomes.
  • Deliver effective instruction using evidence-based teaching practices.
  • Foster a comprehensive, respectful, and supportive learning environment.
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism and instructional quality.
  • Comply with all state and Board of Governors regulations regarding instruction and textbooks

Student Learning and Assessment

  • Evaluate student learning using established grading criteria and assessment rubrics.
  • Provide timely, meaningful, and constructive feedback.
  • Maintain accurate and current records of attendance (when applicable), assignments, grades, and student progress in Canvas.
  • Submit final grades according to university deadlines.
  • Provide all relevant data and information in the required format for accreditation

Clinical and Field Experience Responsibilities (when assigned)

  • Supervise teacher candidates in field experiences and clinical practice.
  • Conduct classroom observations using department-approved observation instruments.
  • Evaluate candidate performance using established assessment rubrics.
  • Provide coaching and reflective feedback designed to improve instructional practice.
  • Collaborate with mentor teachers, school administrators, and school district partners.
  • Support candidates in developing effective instructional planning, classroom management, assessment, and reflective practice.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Utilize Canvas and university-supported instructional technologies.
  • Respond to student communications in a timely manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records in accordance with university policies and FERPA.
  • Participate in required adjunct orientation and professional development activities.
  • Remain current in the discipline, educational research, instructional technology, and Florida educator certification requirements.
  • Assist with curriculum development, assessment activities, accreditation initiatives, or other departmental responsibilities as requested.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in the teaching discipline or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution with at least eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in an appropriate discipline.
  • Valid Florida Educator Certificate or eligibility for certification.
  • Successful P–12 teaching experience.
  • Experience supervising teacher candidates during field or clinical experiences.
  • Experience teaching in higher education.
  • Experience teaching online or hybrid courses.
  • Experience using Canvas or comparable learning management systems.

  • Adaptability to changing instructional practices, educational technologies, and accreditation or state requirements.
  • Experience preparing teacher candidates for Florida educator certification.
  • Knowledge of the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAPs), Florida Standards, and educator preparation requirements.
  • Ability to coach teacher candidates through observation, reflection, planning, and assessment.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement through educator preparation assessment and accreditation processes.

Working Relationships

The adjunct faculty member reports to the Chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning Sciences or the Chair’s designee. The adjunct faculty member works collaboratively with program coordinators, faculty, staff, clinical experience personnel, and other College of Education and University representatives.

When assigned courses that include field or clinical experiences, the adjunct faculty member also works collaboratively with teacher candidates, mentor teachers, school administrators, district personnel, and other P–12 school partners. The adjunct faculty member is expected to maintain timely communication, professional conduct, confidentiality, and positive working relationships with internal and external partners.

Environmental and Physical Requirements

The work is generally performed in classroom, office, online, laboratory, or P–12 school settings. The position may require travel to local schools, clinical placement sites, off-campus instructional locations, or other university-approved sites.

The position requires the ability to:

  • Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and educational partners in person and through electronic formats.
  • Use a computer, Canvas, videoconferencing platforms, and other instructional technologies for extended periods.
  • Prepare, present, and evaluate instructional materials and student work.
  • Attend scheduled classes, meetings, observations, and professional activities, including some evening or weekend assignments when required by the course schedule.
  • Move within classrooms, university facilities, and P–12 school environments as necessary to provide instruction or conduct observations.
  • Perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
