Position Summary:

The Department of Surgery at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) seeks a full-time academic surgeon who is board certified/eligible in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. The primary responsibility of this position is to serve as a Surgical Critical Care physician, providing comprehensive management of critically ill surgical patients in the intensive care unit. The faculty member will also participate in General Surgery call and have a significant role in the education, supervision, and mentorship of FAU General Surgery residents.

 

The faculty member will report directly to the Chair of the Department of Surgery and work collaboratively with the General Surgery Residency Program Director and Department leadership.

 

Responsibilities

• Serve primarily as a Surgical Critical Care/ICU attending, providing approximately 14–16 daytime ICU shifts per month, generally 12-hour shifts.
• Direct daily multidisciplinary ICU rounds and management of critically ill postoperative and surgical patients.
• Manage complex critical care conditions including respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, sepsis and septic shock, hemodynamic instability, multiorgan failure, acute kidney injury, nutritional and metabolic disorders, and complex postoperative complications.
• Perform appropriate critical care procedures within clinical privileges, including airway management, central venous and arterial catheter placement, and other bedside procedures.
• Provide critical care consultation and coordinate care with surgical and multidisciplinary teams.
• Participate in ICU quality improvement, patient safety, and morbidity and mortality activities.
• Participate in approximately 4–5 General Surgery call assignments per month, including evaluation and management of acute surgical conditions, inpatient consultation, operative care, and perioperative management.
• This is not a trauma surgery position; trauma surgery will not be a primary clinical responsibility.
• Provide direct supervision and bedside teaching of General Surgery residents in the ICU and during General Surgery call.
• Participate in resident evaluations, curriculum development, didactic conferences, M&M conferences, journal clubs, case conferences, and other educational activities.
• Maintain an educational environment consistent with ACGME and FAU standards.

The successful candidate will receive an academic faculty appointment in the Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Department of Surgery, with academic rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

• MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited General Surgery residency.
• Board certification/eligibility in General Surgery.
• Fellowship training and board certification/eligibility in Surgical Critical Care.
• Eligibility for an unrestricted Florida medical license and appropriate clinical privileges.
• Demonstrated commitment to academic medicine, graduate medical education, teaching, and resident mentorship.
