Your Recipe for Impact — What You’ll Do

As an Accounting Specialist, you'll play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and integrity of Whataburger's tax accounting operations. You'll help drive timely reporting, support key business initiatives, and provide valuable insights through financial analysis that enable informed decision-making across the organization. Day-to-Day Ingredients — Responsibilities

As an Accounting Specialist, you will:

• Prepare and review tax workpapers, schedules, and supporting documentation.
• Analyze and validate financial data to support accurate tax reporting.
• Coordinate tax payments, extensions, and filings across multiple jurisdictions.
• Execute period-end tax accounting and reporting activities.
• Prepare and post tax-related journal entries.
• Reconcile tax accounts and resolve discrepancies.
• Monitor tax compliance requirements and reporting deadlines.
• Provide guidance on tax accounting matters to internal stakeholders.
• Support tax-related projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Partner cross-functionally to ensure accurate and timely deliverables.
• Maintain compliance with regulatory, accounting, and company standards.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

What You Bring to the Table — Required Experience

As an Accounting Specialist, you must have: 

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
• 2+ years of accounting, tax, or related financial experience.
• Knowledge of tax accounting principles and reporting requirements.
• Experience preparing account reconciliations and journal entries.
• Strong analytical and financial data analysis skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet recurring deadlines.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate across departments and levels of the organization.

Extra Toppings — Desired Experience

As an Accounting Specialist, we prefer you to have: 

• Experience supporting multi-state or multi-jurisdiction tax compliance.
• Experience with tax provision and period-end reporting processes.
• Familiarity with ERP or enterprise accounting systems.
• Advanced Excel skills, including formulas, pivots, and data analysis tools.
• Experience participating in process improvement initiatives.
• Knowledge of corporate, sales, use, or franchise tax reporting.
• Experience working in a large, multi-unit or enterprise environment.

Where & How You’ll Work

This role is based at the San Antonio Home Office, working on‑site Monday through Thursday with remote flexibility on Fridays. In this role, you’ll have strong collaboration with leadership, across cross-functional teams, and with external partners to align capabilities with restaurant realities. The work environment is fast‑paced and requires sound judgment, strategic thinking, and strong collaboration skills. Full‑time availability is required, with occasional extended hours based on business needs, along with occasional travel to properties, project sites, and external meetings. Candidates must reside within commuting distance of the San Antonio Home Office.
