2027 Spring Intern - Pharmaceutical Technical Development - Bioassay

Department Summary

Pharmaceutical Technical Development (PTD) develops, delivers, and supports robust, cost-effective production methods and technologies for innovative therapeutics to meet the needs of Genentech’s Research, Development, Commercial, and Product Operations groups. The group has long been recognized as a world leader in developing large-scale manufacturing processes, sophisticated analytical methods, and effective drug delivery systems.

The Bioassay department resides within PTD and is responsible for developing, characterizing, validating and implementing analytical methods for recombinant proteins and novel therapeutics, and ensuring robust assay performance and data integrity throughout the product lifecycle, from laboratory to manufacturing scale. A Bioassay team member may be responsible for assay development, commercial product support, continuous improvement activities, innovation projects, or other activities within the function.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

As a Technical Development Intern, Laboratory focus, you will be assigned a project in the bioassay group within PTDA.

• The candidate will work alongside scientists to design, execute, optimize and analyze biochemical/immunochemical and/or cell-based assays in support of our clinical through launch-phase biologics products.
• The individual will be responsible for designing and executing experiments, summarizing/presenting data and participating in group meetings and/or project teams.
• The individual will collaborate with multidisciplinary and cross functional teams to develop novel cell-based potency methods for products with complex mechanisms of action in support of process development, characterization, formulation screens, and GMP quality control of product release and stability. 
• This program provides a broad perspective and appreciation of the development of new processes, methods, and technologies at different production scales in the biotechnology industry. 

Program Highlights

• Intensive 6 months, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
• Program start dates are in January 2027 (Spring).
• A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 
• Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
• Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required) 

Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:

• Must be pursuing or have attained an Associate's Degree
• Must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree
• Must have attained a  Bachelor's degree (recent graduates not currently enrolled in a grad program)
• Must be pursuing a Master's degree
• Must have attained a Master's degree
• Must be pursuing a PhD

Required Majors: Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology,  Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Chemistry, Biophysics, or related disciplines are preferred.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

• Relevant work experience in research labs or the biotechnology industry is desirable but not required.
• Prior cell culture experience is preferred but not required.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $26.00-$47.00 per hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
