Under direct supervision of nurse anesthetist, sets up instruments and equipment used to administer anesthetic to patients. Prepares patients for surgical procedures by placing on monitoring devices, blood pressure cuff and electrodes. Assists anesthetist during induction by positioning patients for epidurals and spinals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Anesthesia Technologist (Cer.A.T.T) or Anesthesia Technician (Cer. A. T.) through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT).

3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

EXPERIENCE: 

1. Six (6) months anesthesia experience.

2. Operating room experience.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.  Other duties may be assigned. 

1.    Sets‑up instruments and equipment required to administer anesthetic to patients; maintains proper working condition of monitoring devices used during surgery procedures.

2.    Assembles treatment trays with intravenous solutions and instruments as needed.    

3.    Assists nurse anesthetist or anesthesiologist in preparing patient for surgical procedures and in assigned areas, including:

  • Placing electrodes on patient from EKG monitoring device.

  • Placing and adjusting blood pressure cuff, precordial stethoscope, and other monitoring devices as directed.

  • Assisting during induction and intubation according to prescribed procedures, under supervision of nurse anesthetist or anesthesiologist.

4.    Cleans and sterilizes instruments and equipment to ensure sanitary and aseptic conditions prior to reuse in anesthetic procedures; coordinates sterilization procedures with Central Processing Department.      

5.    Maintains adequate supply of anesthesia equipment and instruments readily available for schedules surgical procedures and emergency code situations; reports unavailability or shortage of items to Director of Anesthesia.  

6.    Enters charges and orders supplies through the computer system.

7.    Cleans and stocks anesthesia stands in operating and obstetrical rooms; obtains equipment, drugs and solutions from work area for anesthetist during case assignments. 

8.    Cleans and stocks spinal and epidural carts in OB and OR; collects equipment from other hospital departments.

9.    Obtains anesthesia equipment such as defibrillator for emergency situations.

10. Places equipment in designated location; and reports defective equipment to proper authorities.

11. Maintains work area in clean and orderly condition.    

12. Attends inservice training, education classes, seminars, and departmental meetings to maintain correct knowledge and to ensure understanding of established policies and maintains confidentiality of hospital related activities and patient care.

1.  No known history of malignant hyperthermia.

2.  Ability to wear and work in protective gear.

3.  Capability of prolonged periods of standing and walking.

4.  Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy loaded carts.

5.  Possess visual and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

1.  Ability to give directions, both written and verbal, and lead people.

2.  Has a thorough understanding of cardiac monitor procedures, hemodynamic techniques, and equipment.

3.  Demonstrates advanced knowledge of anesthesia procedures that are performed by the licensed anesthesia providers, aseptic techniques, anatomy, anesthesia equipment, and regulatory practices. 

4.  Ability to utilize manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFUs) for equipment calibration, operation, troubleshooting and cleaning.

5.  Demonstrates the ability to perform technical duties in complex, clinical urgent/emergent situations.

6.  Ability to perform work functions in an operating or procedural room providing patient care demonstrating proficiency in biologic hazards, infection control, and standard precautions.

7.  Ability to prioritize and multi-task; demonstrates task prioritization based on acuteness of patient care needs. 

8.  Ability to build team relationships.
