Toast is looking for a Senior Software engineer to join our enterprise Away team. You will get to work across the entire Toast platform, including the partner ecosystem. As a member of the enterprise team, you will help ensure that the product is being built to meet the new and expanding needs of these customers.
About this roll* (Responsibilities)
- Design, build, deploy, and maintain highly resilient and scalable features across Toast’s enterprise management products
- Lead complex projects that improve functionality and reliability for our customers
- Partner with a wide array of teams across Toast
- Ensure quality by building automated testing for changes
- Roll* features out to customers, including monitoring for success
- Collaborate with UX and PM on the definition and design of features
- Mentor and coach other engineers

- 5+ years experience building backend services and APIs
- Extensive experience working with an Object Oriented Language like Java or Kotlin, with a deep understanding of testing, quality, and best practices
- Experience shipping production services and balancing getting things done with platform stability and reliability
- Experience building backend services and APIs and scaling distributed systems
- Focused on delivering positive impact for Toast customers
- Enjoys working in a team environment with a shared code-base
- Excellent cross-team communication skills on complex technical topics

Our Tech Stack
Toast’s products run on a stack that ranges from guest and restaurant-facing Android tablets to backend services in Java to internal, guest-facing and restaurant-facing web apps. Our backend services follow a microservice architecture written using Java 8 and DropWizard; we use AWS extensively, ranging from S3 to RDS to Lambda. We have our own platform for dealing with user management, service elevations and robust load balancing. Toast stores data in a set of sharded Postgres databases and utilizes Apache Spark for large scale data workloads including query and batch processing. The front-end is built primarily using React and ES6. The main Toast POS application is an Android application written in Java and Kotlin. For data between tablets and our cloud platform we operate RabbitMQ clusters as well as direct tablet communication to the back end.

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Payments team to build out our unified payment processing solution. This platform offers a single, integrated service for payment acceptance across various channels and supports a configurable enterprise approach. It is designed to allow a build-once, available-to-all strategy for both existing and emerging payment methods. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of services providing supporting and core functionality within and around this payment processing solution.
A day in the life (Responsibilities)
- Design, build, and deliver features for Toast’s payments products
- Develop and implement automated test suite to ensure the code shipped to our customers meets the highest quality standards

- 5+ years of experience in designing and implementing robust backend services
- Proven ability to develop scalable and secure APIs that integrate with various internal/external systems
- Knowledge of best practices in API lifecycle management, including versioning, documentation, and deprecation strategies
- Demonstrated experience with microservices architecture and containerization technologies for enhanced scalability and maintainability

- Demonstrated proficiency with DynamoDB or PostgreSQL
- Proficiency in Kotlin (or Java and willing to learn Kotlin) and Kotlin-specific frameworks and libraries for building efficient backend solutions

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills, experience, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions if eligible), equity, and benefits. As a Senior Director of FinTech Engineering, you will lead engineering leaders and teams focused on merchant-side payments, enabling restaurants to operate securely and at scale. Your scope includes building and evolving core payments capabilities with a strong emphasis on fraud and risk management, compliance, and resilient transaction processing, alongside core APIs and payment primitives that support both current and future products.
You will collaborate closely with peers across Toast, shaping product direction through technical insight and contributing to the long-term technical roadmap. You’ll partner with product and design counterparts to validate and deliver solutions that address real customer needs. Your leadership will focus on growing high-performing teams, developing their skills, and driving creative ways to improve effectiveness and efficiency. - Drive the delivery of meaningful business outcomes across multiple teams by leading planning, execution, and measurement of impact.
- Partner closely with cross-functional leaders across Product, UX, Engineering, Business, Customer Care, FinTech Operations, Partnerships, Marketing, and TechOps to define valuable, actionable work and ensure end-to-end software delivery, including team ownership of monitoring, continuous improvement, and production issue resolution.
- Champion the adoption of AI tools and practices to accelerate development, enhance team velocity, and pioneer new ways of building, setting the standard for an AI-first engineering organization.
- Continuously incorporate advances in software technology and industry best practices to improve product quality and delivery.

Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements):
- 20+ years of experience building and operating software in SaaS environments, including 5+ years in senior leadership or equivalent roles.
- Partner with C-level executives to shape FinTech strategy, guide investment decisions, and ensure engineering execution supports Toast’s long-term business goals.
- Experience leading multiple engineering groups and leaders to bring new products to market and scale existing platforms in a high-performance SaaS (or comparable) organization.
- Accountability for broader business outcomes, including revenue growth, customer experience, product adoption, and regulatory compliance.
- Own the technical vision and execution of Toast’s core payments platform, ensuring scalable, secure, and compliant transaction processing and global payment integrations.
- Lead multiple engineering teams responsible for revenue-critical, highly available payment systems, with accountability for uptime, latency, correctness, and financial integrity.
- Demonstrated experience building and scaling large-scale payment systems in a fintech or payments-heavy SaaS environment, including high-volume transaction processing and financial reconciliation.
- Strong background in payment rails, processors, and card networks, with hands-on leadership delivering secure, compliant, and highly reliable payment platforms.
- Experience operating mission-critical financial systems with strict SLAs, auditability, and regulatory requirements.
- Deep understanding of payment networks, regulatory compliance (e.g., PSD2, KYC/AML), and emerging fraud trends (e.g., account takeover, synthetic identity).
- Define and execute the end-to-end fraud and risk management strategy across all payment methods (e.g., credit cards, ACH, digital wallets).
- Partner with Fraud, Risk, Compliance, and Product leaders to evolve fraud and risk management, including fraud detection, disputes, and chargebacks at scale.
- Demonstrated ability and desire to grow and develop engineering leaders, mentoring both emerging and experienced managers in high-performance environments.
