As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll be responsible for evolving and maintaining a high-throughput banking ecosystem for merchants inside our Global Bank Tribe. What You’ll Do

• Collaborate with a global team to design and build a unified global banking platform. This includes high-level APIs for multiple regions and local implementations, ensuring high availability and observability
• Be part of the transformation team that is transforming monolithic services into decoupled, highly scalable, region-agnostic, unified global bank services
• Design, implement, and iteratively develop highly available backend services, while continuously evaluating and implementing new methods to ensure the high reliability of transfer systems
• Maintain and improve core services utilizing a modern, cloud-native technology stack (AWS, K8s), with microservices written in Golang, Kotlin and Java and Elixir.
• Improve test coverage for existing services and drive the end-to-end delivery of changes, including testing, observability, and monitoring.

Our tech stack includes Go, AWS, Kafka, PostgreSQL, and Kubernetes, supported by a strong observability toolchain with Prometheus, Grafana, and Honeycomb. We also actively use AI‑assisted development tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and others.

SumUp’s engineering culture is built around ownership. We follow a “build it, run it, improve it” model, with strong observability and a focus on learning. Engineers have clear scope and autonomy, with decisions documented, reviewed, and made collaboratively.

As part of the Bank Activation and Revenue team, you will join a high-impact growth engine within the bank. Our mission is to guide merchants in unlocking the most value out of their SumUp Business Account during their activation journey: we aim to convert 100% of SumUp’s ecosystem users into active Bank users.

We own the critical journey from the moment a merchant opens an account until they understand how the business account can solve their business needs, making it part of their daily routine. To achieve this at scale, we are building a greenfield activation and engagement platform consisting of a series of initiatives and experiments to drive adoption and engagement of SumUp users with the business account. Your work will directly drive revenue by enabling seamless cross-selling of the entire SumUp product suite to millions of merchants.

What You’ll Do

• Build Greenfield Services: Design and implement the trifecta of services (Banners, Rewards, and Feature Toggles) from the ground up to power global product experimentation.
• Drive Activation: Create the technical logic that tracks and incentivizes users through their first five meaningful transactions, ensuring a smooth path to becoming a long-term banking partner.
• Own the Stack E2E: We follow a “build it, run it, own it” model. You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of your features, from architectural design to production monitoring.
• High-Velocity Engineering: Participate in a culture of daily deliveries. We value moving fast, testing hypotheses, and iterating based on real-world data.
• Bridge Client & Backend: Build robust APIs that power the mobile and web banking experience while managing complex asynchronous processing for rewards and incentives via Kafka.
• Collaborate with Stakeholders: Work closely with other engineering teams across the Bank and the wider SumUp ecosystem to ensure our activation tools are easily integrable and highly scalable.

Join SumUp's Mobile Platform Squad as a Senior Android Engineer and become a cornerstone of our rapidly expanding Android ecosystem. With significant investment in flagship products, we are empowering our feature teams to deliver world-class experiences. You will be instrumental in building the robust foundation that enables over 40 Android engineers to operate with maximum productivity and efficiency, directly shaping the future of mobile payments for millions of merchants.

• Eliminating Bottlenecks: Strategically addressing and resolving critical bottlenecks in CI/CD pipelines and app infrastructure that could impede the delivery of new features and improvements.
• Elevating Developer Experience: Architecting and implementing cutting-edge tools and infrastructure that drastically enhance the developer experience, reduce build times, and streamline workflows for our large Android engineering team.

What you’ll do:

• Strategic Impact: Lead the charge in shaping the core experience for both merchants and our internal Android developers, directly contributing to SumUp's ambitious Android product roadmap.
• Technical Leadership: Architect, develop, and maintain critical tools, frameworks, and infrastructure that significantly enhance the consistency, scalability, and reliability of our mobile apps, ensuring no negative impact across our distinct Android products.
