What you'll get to do

• Firmware Development: Have direct responsibility for the implementation of embedded software solutions for client projects from ideation, through design, development, and into production.
• Lead and Mentor: Act as a player-coach for our engineering team. You will support and mentor product development teams to advance new technologies and bring new products to market. Coach engineers on essential professional skills like project management and project scoping.
• Provide Technical Leadership: Serve as a technical backstop, providing expert guidance and oversight for embedded firmware solutions, and actively mentor junior engineers to foster their growth and technical excellence.
• Pioneer Best Practices: Champion and implement cutting-edge best practices across the firmware development lifecycle, including advanced source code management, robust version control, streamlined DevOps, and comprehensive automated testing strategies.
• Solve Complex Challenges: Conduct in-depth electrical characterization and debugging using advanced test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) to diagnose intermittent and complex hardware/firmware interactions and ensure robust system performance. Create innovative firmware solutions to solve complex and often unique problems, with few or ambiguous requirements.
• Influence Strategy: Contribute strategically to new business opportunities and project scoping, translating technical vision into actionable plans. Collaborate with team members to incorporate firmware development scoping into project proposals
• Drive Collaboration: Work closely with multi-disciplinary teams (electrical, mechanical, industrial design, manufacturing) to develop unified system methodologies and support critical hardware demonstrations.

What you bring to the Team

• Extensive Experience: 15+ years of progressive experience in embedded firmware engineering, demonstrating expertise across diverse hardware platforms, programming languages (primarily C and C++), and a wide range of microcontrollers. We value deep problem-solving skills over a rigid adherence to specific years of experience if a candidate can demonstrate exceptional capability.
• Creating Innovative Solutions: Expertise in crafting embedded software solutions which bring complex electromechanical systems to life. Demonstrated success developing firmware across diverse applications, from precision motion control to sensor integration and real-time system coordination.
• Product Development: Strong background in electromechanical systems development with 10+ years of electronic product experience from concept through manufacturing.
• Architectural Expertise: Demonstrated ability designing scalable, maintainable, and robust software architectures.
• Hardware/Firmware Mastery: 
  • Strong background in hardware/firmware interaction such as firmware control of actuators, motors, sensors, etc.  
  • Expertise in programming a variety of microcontrollers and their common peripherals such as UART, SPI, I2C, USB, GPIO, ADC, PWM, etc.  
  • Experience developing device drivers and applications in embedded Linux runtimes (Raspbian, Yocto, Ubuntu, or others) to enable communications between microcontrollers and external hardware peripherals ○ Implementation of a variety of runtime environments (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, others), as well as bare-metal programming.
• Software Development Process: Experience with source code management tools such as Git/Subversion, and Jira. Experience using firmware development tools such as IDEs, compilers, debuggers, and cross-compilers.
• Project Leadership: Proven ability to lead projects, including project scoping and task estimation. Understanding of Agile methodologies and experience as a scrum team member and scrum master.
• Bonus Qualification: 
  • Working knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g., FCC, UL) and an understanding of medical device certification (ISO 13485, IEC 62304).  
  • Implementation of control algorithms and an understanding of control theory is a plus.  
  • Experience programming in specialized runtimes like ROS and QT.
• Communication & Collaboration: Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical team members in a consulting capacity.
• Education: BS in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or a related field.

Additional Details

Base Salary Range: $160K - $220K. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity. This role is also eligible for annual bonus and long-term incentive compensation (LTIP), in addition to a competitive benefits package.

What You'll Get to Do:

We’re hiring mechanical engineers who are excited for the variety and challenge of product development.

In this role you will exercise your mechanical design experience in an energetic and progressive consulting environment. You’ll join a group of talented engineers to develop new technologies and bring new products to market. You will further your experience developing designs, building and testing prototypes, and using the knowledge gained through testing to refine and improve on previous designs. You will be immersed in Fikst’s hands-on culture of experimentation and building, using our full CNC machining and turning centers, array of 3D-printers and laser  cutters, and a huge arsenal of scientific and engineering equipment. You will do all of this in lively collaboration with your fellow engineers and our clients.

What You Bring to the Team:

• S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
• 3-5 years of industry experience
• Broad technical background and the desire to learn more
• 3D CAD experience (Solidworks preferred)
• Experience with a range of manufacturing processes is a plus (injection molding, machining, sheet metal, casting, etc.)
• Experience designing robotic systems or industrial automation a plus

Additional Details

Compensation: The anticipated base salary range for this role is [$95,000 - $120,000]. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity. We are seeking a highly motivated, results-oriented program development and client engagement professional. WARNING: This is not a typical “biz dev” position. Everything we do is custom. We work on emerging technologies across life sciences, fluidic systems, greentech, and industrial products and collaborate very closely with our clients to commercialize those technologies.  We are looking for someone who has had experience as a practicing engineer developing technology-centric hardware products with a passion for connecting with clients, building relationships, and securing programs that our technical team is excited to work on.

• Manage opportunities: Initiate and drive communications with prospective clients, manage overall interactions and information flow in the early stages of the client engagement, leverage our CRM system for contact management, tasks, and deal tracking, and work closely with senior leadership to prioritize opportunities.
• Communicate capabilities and understand client needs: Meet with prospective clients, present our overall capabilities, identify the key areas of opportunity, and assess how we can best support the client team.
• Build client relationships: Develop relationships with key decision-makers and collaborators at client organizations considering both the short term opportunities and the longer term relationship.
• Develop and present proposals: In collaboration with the technical project team, prepare and present proposals, statements of work, and presentations to prospective clients, highlighting our value proposition, technical capabilities, and competitive advantages.
• Initiate and manage legal document execution: Collaborate with the legal team and Fikst leadership to ensure timely execution of NDAs, MSAs, and finalized contracts.
• Negotiate and close program opportunities: Work with the technical project teams and senior leadership to negotiate and close program opportunities.
• Stay connected to project work and advocate for client relationship building: Be engaged and aware of the execution of the various projects. Be an advocate for the mutual success of the engagement throughout the life of the project and for the establishment of a long term client relationship.
• Make connections with potential, new clients - Through participation in industry events, contacts at local organizations, online platforms, and the leveraging of your personal network, expand the awareness of Fikst and our capabilities and identify opportunities for potential engagement with new clients.

What you bring to the Team

• Experience: 8+ years in a product development environment. Consulting and/or business development experience is a plus.
• Education: BS degree in engineering or technical field, or equivalent.
• Technical Knowledge: First-hand understanding of early-stage technology development and product commercialization, life sciences experience is a plus.
• Passion for business: A true passion to land programs that the technical team is excited to work on and that add value to the Fikst business.
• Industry Network and Knowledge: Knowledge of relevant industries and a network of contacts.

You also involved several subject matter experts in the conversations, gathered crucial input from the Fikst technical team, and drafted a comprehensive statement of work. We’re hiring mechanical engineering interns excited about product development. In this role engineers will gain experience with mechanical design and consulting. Engineers will work on product development teams to bring new products and technologies to market. They will gain experience developing designs, building and testing prototypes, and using the knowledge gained through testing to refine and improve on previous designs. Fikst’s projects are all hands-on and our prototyping shop includes two CNC’s, six 3D-printers, three laser cutters and a variety of other scientific and engineering equipment. Engineers will also gain experience meeting with and presenting to clients. This role is intended to last at least three months and ideally could last up to six months. Timing and start dates will be discussed during the interview process.

We’re hiring entry level mechanical engineers excited about product development. In this role engineers will gain experience with mechanical design and consulting. Engineers will work on product development teams to bring new products and technologies to market. They will gain experience developing designs, building and testing prototypes, and using the knowledge gained through testing to refine and improve on previous designs. Fikst’s projects are all hands-on and our prototyping shop includes two CNC’s, six 3D-printers, three laser cutters and a variety of other scientific and engineering equipment. Engineers will also gain experience meeting with and presenting to clients. This role will take the form of a 6-month post-graduate internship. The internship is targeted at applicants who would like to gain more design experience while trying engineering consulting and can lead to full-time positions.
