About the Team

The Platform Development organization powers Crunchyroll's core access and security platform. This platform includes authentication and authorization, notifications, and AI runtimes. It enables other teams to safely build fan-facing features on top of a stable, compliant, and leverageable foundation.

The team's mission is to provide reliable, secure fan access across devices and partners, integrate access services with data and compliance orchestration, and evolve notifications and AI inference into reusable platform capabilities that accelerate product and partner launches. We collaborate with product, data, security, client engineering, video, and service monetization teams to deliver seamless and secure experiences for millions of anime fans worldwide.

About the Role

As the Senior Manager, Platform Development, you will report to the VP of Platform Engineering. You will lead a team of software engineers building and operating the core services that govern how fans access Crunchyroll. These services include login, identity, authorization, partner authentication, compliance-aware account flows, notifications, and AI runtimes.

You will own the team's strategy and execution, guiding the decomposition of legacy authentication and IAM into clearer, safer platform services, stabilizing and evolving our notification stack toward a unified orchestration layer, and working with our data team to layer the foundations of a shared AI inference platform. You will lean on your engineering and leadership experience to raise the bar on architecture, reliability, security, and delivery, while hiring and developing a high-performing, inclusive team aligned to Crunchyroll's values.

Core Responsibilities

Team leadership and people management

• Lead, coach, and grow a team of software engineers, providing clear expectations, feedback, and career development aligned with Crunchyroll's engineering manager career ladder.

Domain ownership: access, notifications, and AI runtimes

• Own the roadmap and execution for Platform Development's core domains: authentication and identity, authorization, notifications, and AI runtimes, ensuring these services are reliable, secure, and easy for other teams to adopt.
• Partner with Data and security teams to integrate access services with compliance orchestration for GDPR/DSAR and age-assurance requirements, including data wipe/anonymization and age-based access controls in key markets.
• Define and maintain SLOs, on-call practices, and incident response workflows for your services, in partnership with SRE/DevOps and Engineering Operations.

Platform architecture and modernization

• Lead the decomposition of existing account-auth and IAM systems into well-bounded services (core auth, client policies, consent, risk/security), laying the groundwork for future capabilities like passkeys, social login, and targeted friction models.
• Guide the evolution of notifications from legacy systems toward a modern, observable Universal Notification Orchestrator, starting with critical flows such as OTP and security/compliance messaging.
• Collaborate with Data and AI/ML teams to define the vision and reference architecture for a shared AI inference platform, supporting multi-model serving, observability, and cost management for risk, security, and experience optimization use cases.

Cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder management

• Work closely with product management, program management, and partner teams to translate fan and business outcomes into a clear, prioritized roadmap for Platform Development.
• Partner with client, video, and partner engineering to improve authentication success, account linking flows, and time-to-first-play across distribution channels and devices.
• Communicate status, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to senior leadership, ensuring alignment on priorities and visible impact to fan experience, regulatory posture, and platform leverage.

Operational excellence and continuous improvement

• Ensure your team designs for observability, security, and operability, embedding testing, monitoring, alerting, and runbooks into all critical services.
• Use incident and operational data to drive learning and durable improvements, in partnership with SRE and Engineering Operations (RCA, standards, and best practices).
• Contribute to and adopt shared engineering practices across Platform Engineering, including multi-account AWS patterns, GitHub security, and self-service infrastructure and deployment workflows.

About You

At Crunchyroll, our Cloud Reliability team within the Infrastructure Engineering team forms the foundation on which our services are built and directly influence our customer experience and the velocity of our engineers. Our team focus is to ensure that our developers are enabled, self-service, that everything about our infrastructure is automated and that our services are highly reliable and scalable. Cloud Reliability team members will engage directly with development teams on helping them become empowered and effective at delivering on our Infrastructure.

About the role

As a Staff DevOps Engineer within the Infrastructure Engineering team, you are essential in automating and scaling the systems and services that power our streaming platform. You will work with our DevOps team, delivery teams and lead projects related to infrastructure automation, scaling, CICD, driving them forward to completion and ensuring that the platform processes, automation and best practices are being followed. In collaboration with other engineers, you develop tools and systems that support services and facilitate high-quality software delivery and architecture / infrastructure. You are expected to be highly collaborative working across teams to understand the needs, establish best practices and automate them whenever possible. You will also play a key role in partnering with our development teams and understanding their needs and assisting them in their journey.

You will report to the Senior Manager, Cloud Reliability - Infrastructure Engineering. We are considering applicants for our Los Angeles, CA or San Francisco, CA offices. We work a hybrid schedule, in-office 3 days a week.

About you

The ideal candidate for the Staff DevOps Engineer role has a strong background in DevOps, automation, infrastructure as code and enabling software engineers to deliver independently and safely at scale. You have experience in building and scaling high-availability systems, with a focus on operational excellence. This role involves leading and mentoring other engineers, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and continually improving our technology platform and infrastructure. Your ability to excel in a collaborative environment sets an example for fellow engineers, contributing to a culture of high quality and standards in all aspects of our work.

Requirements:

• At least a Bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer science, information technology, information systems, or similar.
• 12+ years of relevant experience in DevOps and infrastructure management.
• 8+ years working in production environments, combining DevOps and software engineering.
• 5+ years of experience managing containerized infrastructure in ECS or Kubernetes.
• Proficiency in automation, creating reusable patterns and solutions.
• Expertise in GitOps practices and CI/CD, including tools like GHA & CodeDeploy and infrastructure automation within CI/CD.
• 5+ years experience in AWS and its major services such as ECS, S3, SQS, Lambda, containerization, utilizing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) such as Pulumi and Terraform.
• Proficient in programming in TypeScript with familiarity of other languages such as Go or Python.
• Familiarity with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and non-relational databases (e.g., DynamoDB).
• Experience guiding software engineers in production best practices, sharing knowledge across teams.
• Design and deployment experience with data sovereignty-driven designs (e.g., GDPR).
• Collaboration with other engineers to build tools and systems supporting services and facilitating high-quality software delivery.

Pluses:

• Knowledge of streaming video delivery, video encoding workflows, video origin architecture, and issues of scale for video delivery.
• Familiarity with big data and payments domain.
• Understand security concepts such as cryptography, authentication, authorization, and security protocols.
• Experience with Vault, Packer or other HashiCorp tools.
• Knowledge, or working experience with GCP.

Your expertise in cloud technologies and DevOps methodologies enables you to take on complex challenges independently and create scalable solutions that meet our customers' needs. You will work with our delivery teams and lead projects, driving them forward to completion and ensuring that the platform processes and best practices are being followed. In collaboration with other engineers, you develop tools and systems that support services and facilitate high-quality software delivery. You will work with our delivery teams to ensure that their systems are efficient and reliable, guide them to better quality and practices including observability and troubleshooting of services & incident management. You are expected to take initiatives to improve what we do overall, introduce new technologies & processes when it is needed and share knowledge across teams.

You will report to the Senior Manager, Core Infrastructure Engineering.

About You

You have an in-depth understanding of Software and DevOps methodologies, automation, and infrastructure as code. Your experience in designing, building, and scaling high availability systems shows your commitment to operational excellence. You excel in a collaborative environment and can work well with your teammates, providing a good example to other engineers to achieve high quality and standards in everything they do.

Requirements:

• At least a Bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer science, information technology, information systems, or similar.
• 8+ years of experience working in production-level environments as a DevOps/SRE
• Proficient in AWS cloud technologies, coupled with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) such as Pulumi and Terraform
• 3+ years of experience managing containerized infrastructure in ECS or Kubernetes
• Experience in GitOps practices and CI/CD.
• Experience managing Linux based infrastructure.
• Experience with observability and instrumentation of services so that efficient dashboards and alerts are created.
• Familiarity with relational databases like PostgreSQL, MySQL and non-relational databases like MongoDB, DynamoDB.
• Experience with CDN and caching technologies including AWS CloudFront. 
• Experience working with and guiding Software Engineers in production best practices, sharing knowledge across teams and teammates.
• Experience in at least two or more scripting languages including TypeScript.
• Able to accommodate periodic off-hour meetings with the international team members.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with stakeholders.
• Participate in an on-call and developer support rotations.

• Knowledge of streaming video delivery, video encoding workflows, video origin architecture, and issues of scale for video delivery.
• Proficiency in TypeScript
