Worldwide-Remote Salary Report: What You Should Ask For

Alexei Khachatrian · · 3 min read

Worldwide-remote jobs have a median salary of $119,937 USD. But pay varies sharply by field - software engineers median $190,000 while other roles lag far behind.

The Median and Your Baseline

If you are looking at a worldwide-remote role, the median salary is $119,937 USD. That is your anchor point. Half of roles paying data show salaries above that figure, half below.

But the distribution is wide. The middle 50 percent of roles - those between the 25th and 75th percentile - pay between $72,800 and $195,000. That $122,000 spread means context matters enormously. Field, seniority, and company size all shape what you should expect.

Where the Money Is: Tech Roles Command the Premium

The salary story changes completely when you break it down by field. Technical roles dominate the high end.

  • Software & Web Engineering: median $190,000. This field has the largest sample of remote roles and the strongest pay.

  • Security: median $187,675. Specialist expertise drives high compensation.

  • Data, AI & Analytics: median $183,500. Demand for AI and machine learning skills remains strong.

  • DevOps, Cloud & Infrastructure: median $180,000. Infrastructure specialists earn consistently above the overall median.

  • Programming Languages & Frameworks: median $172,500. Narrower specialization still pays well.

  • Hardware, Electrical & Robotics: median $164,088. Hardware roles fall below software but remain above the overall median.

Every technical field listed sits well above the $119,937 overall median. If you work in software or infrastructure, you have leverage. If your role does not sit in this list, you are likely negotiating from a weaker position.

The Outliers: When Numbers Become Unreliable

The salary data includes some extreme outliers. A handful of roles show compensation at $5,000,000 USD, including an Equipment Coordinator, Executive Assistant, and Client Partner roles. These figures distort the picture and likely reflect either data errors, equity packages being counted as salary, or roles that are not truly comparable to the mainstream market.

Use the median and percentile range to negotiate, not the outliers. A $5 million salary tells you nothing about what you should ask for.

How to Use This Data When Job Hunting

When you apply for a worldwide-remote role:

  • If it is a software engineering or security role, use $180,000-$195,000 as your negotiation floor, not your ceiling.

  • If it is data or infrastructure, expect the range to be $180,000-$185,000 as a reasonable ask.

  • If it falls outside these technical fields, anchor to the $72,800-$195,000 percentile range and ask for specifics about the role level and company budget.

  • Always ask the hiring team for the salary range upfront. If they do not provide one, that is a warning sign.

The sample size for this report is limited - only 74 roles with salary data in the worldwide-remote pool. Larger, more mature salary datasets exist, but JobsRadar's numbers reflect what is actually listed right now, not survey estimates or historical benchmarks.
