The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for developing and supporting prototype manufacturing processes within Prototype Build Operations. The role ensures that prototype products are built using assembly methods, tooling, fixtures, equipment, and traceability systems that closely represent the future production environment.
Working closely with Engineering, Global Manufacturing Engineering, Production Plants, Quality, Technicians, and external suppliers, the Manufacturing Engineer supports product development, manufacturing readiness, and successful production launches.
Key responsibilities
· Being a key player in the industrialization and launch of new products within Prototype Build Operations.
· Ensure prototype builds replicate future serial production processes, assembly sequences, tooling, fixtures, equipment, and traceability methods.
· Work with Product Engineering on design reviews, manufacturability assessments, and assembly sequence definition.
· Collaborate with Global Manufacturing Engineering and production plants to align prototype and production manufacturing processes.
· Create and maintain Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), internal documents, work instructions, PFMEA, and Control Plans.
· Develop and support manufacturing tooling, fixtures, and assembly processes for prototype builds.
· Specify, procure, commission, and improve manufacturing equipment and machines.
· Program manufacturing equipment and perform application trials.
· Troubleshoot manufacturing processes, equipment, and automation systems.
· Lead equipment qualification activities, including FAT and SAT when applicable.
· Manage spare parts and support preventive maintenance activities.
· Configure and maintain Factory Information System (FIS) and manufacturing traceability systems.
· Ensure manufacturing best practices and lessons learned are implemented into new products and processes.
· Support prototype build activities and provide hands-on technical support when required.
· Lead and support root cause investigations using structured problem-solving methodologies such as 5 Why and Shainin Red X.
· Drive continuous improvement activities to improve safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.
· Work closely with Machine suppliers, Product Engineering, Global Manufacturing Engineering, Project team and Prototype Build Operations team
What we’re looking for
· Bachelor's or Master's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field.
· Minimum 3 years of experience in Manufacturing Engineering, preferably within the automotive industry.
· Experience in prototype builds, product launches, manufacturing industrialization, or New Product Introduction (NPI).
· Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as automated and semi-automated assembly, torque-controlled fastening, leak testing, servo pressing, dispensing and soldering.
· Experience with equipment specification, procurement, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
· Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical and pneumatic drawings.
· Knowledge of automation technologies including PLCs, robotics, vision systems and traceability systems is an advantage.
· Experience creating and maintaining manufacturing documentation including PFDs, PFMEA, Control Plans, Build Books, and Work Instructions.
· Familiarity with MES system and manufacturing traceability systems.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience using structured methodologies.
· Proficiency in Excel and statistical analysis tools; Minitab is a plus.
· Strong communication and project management skills.
· Positive, proactive, results-oriented, team-oriented, and safety-focused mindset.
