                                                  COUNTY OF HAMILTON, INDIANA

POSITION: Cook

DEPARTMENT: Jail

WORK SCHEDULE: As assigned

STATUS:  Full-time

FLSA STATUS:  Non-exempt

HOURLY RATE: $25.7269 per hour

Incumbent serves as Cook for the Jail, responsible for preparing and serving meals, cleaning kitchen and equipment, and supervising Jail Inmate workers.

DUTIES:

Prepares monthly menus and recipes, planning special meals for detainees with unique dietary needs according to doctor's orders and discussing with Director of Food Services as needed.

Supervises and trains Jail Inmate workers in preparing and serving meals, adding and subtracting measurements and quantities in recipes to adjust amount of prepared food as needed, and ensuring preparation is compliant with local codes, meals are served as scheduled, and Inmate workers work cooperatively.

Supervises and trains Jail Inmate workers in cleaning and sanitizing all kitchen work areas, ensuring compliance with local sanitary codes.

Responsible for completing a weekly inventory. Receives and verifies deliveries and ensures storage areas are maintained clean and orderly.

Provides production sheets, meal counts for each meal served, special diets served and maintain security of knife and utensil inventory.

Performs related duties as assigned.

As a result of the duties associated with this job, there is the potential of becoming exposed to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious diseases.  To safeguard employees and eliminate the liability placed on Hamilton County, employees working in this position shall begin the three shot Hepatitis B vaccination and subsequent training within 10 days of their initial job assignment per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030(f)(2)(i).  The initial and two subsequent vaccinations shall be administered by the Hamilton County Health Department and free of charge to the employee.  If the employee has previously received the three shot Hepatitis B vaccination, official documentation must be provided to the supervisor identifying the dates in which each shot was appropriately administered.  A Temporary Medical Declination may be made for a period of up to six months.  A Declination form must be completed, outlining the medical reasons for the temporary declination and forwarded to the Safety & Risk Manager.  Employees temporarily declining the vaccine are prohibited from performing any duties in which they may be exposed to a blood borne pathogen or other potentially infectious disease until they are able to begin/continue the series of vaccinations.  Failure to comply will result in termination of employment.

As a condition of employment, all employees of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office are expected to comply with the agency’s Drug Free Workplace Policy. Therefore, employees working in this position must follow all County policies and procedures with respect to drug and alcohol testing.  The policy requires random drug testing and the disclosure of certain drug prescriptions that are labeled as possibly affecting or impairing judgment, coordination or other senses, (including dizziness or drowsiness), or which may adversely affect the employee’s ability to perform work in a safe and productive manner.

I.  JOB REQUIREMENTS AND KNOWLEDGE OF WORK:

High school diploma or GED.

Working knowledge of principles of sanitary food preparation, and ability to apply such knowledge to preparing large quantities of food.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of department safety policies and procedures, and ability to supervise proper operation of a variety of industrial kitchen equipment, including dishwasher, steamer, food processor, blender, can opener, scales, meat slicer, vertical cutter, oven, mixer and grill.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, and appropriately respond to constructive criticism.

Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations.

Ability to ensure maintenance of clean, sanitized work areas and equipment, proper use of chemical cleaners.

Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and jail inmate workers, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to work with others in a team environment, and maintain appropriate, respectful interrelationships with co-workers.

Ability to work rapidly for long periods and work on several tasks at the same time.

Ability to physically perform essential duties of the position, including standing for long periods, standing and walking at will, close vision, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, hearing sounds/communication, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.

Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to regularly work extended and weekend hours.

II.  RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent performs standard, recurring duties according to well-established policies and procedures, with priorities determined by supervisor. Incumbent applies knowledge learned on the job and exercising some independent judgement in determining appropriate quantities of food to prepare. Some care and skill are required to prevent damage to kitchen equipment and injury to self and others. Incumbent is responsible for the whereabouts of all inmate workers assigned to them and does their very best to ensure that contraband is not taken from the kitchen to ultimately provide and facilitate for a safe facility for all inmates

III.  PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers and jail inmate workers for the purpose of exchanging information and supervising/directing inmate workers assigned to kitchen.

Incumbent reports directly to Director of Food Services.

IV.  PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Incumbent oversees food preparation and kitchen cleaning activities involving standing for long periods, standing and walking at will, close vision, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, hearing sounds/communication, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.

V.  WORKING CONDITIONS:

Incumbent performs duties in a jail facility kitchen involving periodic exposure to normal hazards of food preparation, such as cuts and burns, and normal hazards of a jail environment where safety and health may be jeopardized. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others. Incumbent regularly works extended and weekend hours.
