Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director of Sport Programs provides strategic leadership, administrative oversight, and operational direction for Campus Recreation’s comprehensive Intramural and Club Sports programs. Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Programs, this position directly supervises the Sport Programs Coordinator, drives overall program strategy, and oversees the daily administration of the Intramural Sports serving 2,100+ unique student participants annually. Additionally, the Assistant Director shares management of the department's outdoor facilities.

The Assistant Director develops and delivers inclusive, high-impact programming that promotes student retention, belonging, and holistic well-being through strategic partnerships across Campus Life, including Wellbeing, Residence Life & Housing, Student Engagement, and Affinity Centers. This role requires strong administrative leadership, sound fiscal and risk management, effective facility and program scheduling, and a demonstrated commitment to student development and engagement.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

Administrative Leadership, Risk Management & Outdoor Facilities (35%)

  • Direct, mentor, and evaluate the full-time Sport Programs Coordinator, establishing clear performance expectations, professional development goals, and workflow priorities.

  • Establish and execute long-term strategic plans, operational goals, and learning outcomes for the Sport Programs unit in alignment with departmental and university missions.

  • Co-manage Campus Recreation’s outdoor facility footprint (3 fields, 8 courts, disc golf course, and running trails); direct facility scheduling, reservation approvals, and weekly maintenance with Facilities team

  • Design and implement comprehensive risk management policies, safety protocols, travel procedures, and facility inspection standards to minimize university liability and protect participant safety.

  • Conduct routine inspections of outdoor fields, courts, and sports gear; oversee the  inventory and lifecycle maintenance of all program equipment.

  • Serves as on-call administrator for Intramural and Club Sports incidents and medical emergencies 

  • Manage a $400,000+ departmental unit budget in partnership with the Senior Associate Director of Programs; build multi-year staffing projection models and 5-year budget forecasts.

Intramural Sports Administration & Experiential Student Development (35%)

  • Transform student employment into an experiential learning model by hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating 2 undergraduate Program Assistants and a team of 85+ Intramural Sports Supervisors and Officials.

  • Direct the management of all intramural leagues, single-day tournaments, and special events serving 2,100+ participants, including league structure creation, rules formulation, and game scheduling.

  • Oversee shift management and operational support for evening and weekend intramural league play and special events.

  • Lead assessment efforts by gathering, analyzing, and reporting on participation metrics, participant satisfaction, demographic engagement, and student learning outcomes.

  • Oversee marketing initiatives and promotional campaigns for Intramural Sports to drive enrollment and expand participant diversity.

  • Maintain oversight of departmental documentation, including accident/incident reports, liability waivers, certification logs, and employee performance appraisals.

Club Sport Program Oversight (15%)

  • Oversee high-level policy development and administrative governance for 40+ club sport teams, advising student leadership on safety and travel compliance.

  • Guide assigned club officers through fiscal governance, reviewing $300,000+ in annual operating, capital, and supplemental budget requests prior to SBAC submission.

  • Oversee club sport risk management plans through safety training, event-tracking reports, driver safety courses, and management of Campus Recreation transportation vehicles. 

Strategic Campus Partnerships & Retention (15%)
 

  • Lead high impact pre-orientation program (R.E.C) to accelerate 90-100 first-year student’s wellbeing and build meaningful connections. 

  • Collaborate with Residence Life & Housing on "The Forest" initiative and other targeted residence hall programming to drive first-year student retention and community building.

  • Lead campus events and late-night programming in collaboration with Campus Life partners (such as New Student Orientation and MLK Basketball Tournament.)

  • Cultivate inclusive, collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and campus stakeholders to ensure program accessibility.

  • Perform other job-related duties, university committee assignments, and special projects as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

  • Master’s degree and a minimum of at least 3 years full-time professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience. 

  • Knowledge of rules and officiating techniques in major intramural team sports and/or advising club sport teams.

  • Experience hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating student employees. 

  • Effective written and verbal communications skills; Proficiency in computing skills and assessment including the use of IMLeagues. 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

  • Experience advising club sport teams with budgeting and inventory management.
     

Accountabilities: 

  • Supervise Coordinator, Sport Programs.

  • Hire/onboard, train, supervise, and evaluate program assistants and student staff.

Physical Requirements:

  • This position will require sitting and standing 

  • Occasional exposure to varying weather conditions 

  • Occasional lifting of 50+ pounds
