Platform Engineer (Encryption & Data Security)

The Platform Engineer (Encryption & Data Security) is responsible for designing, building, and operating platform capabilities that ensure secure data handling across the organization. This role focuses on encryption, certificate lifecycle management, and data classification/labeling, enabling development teams to securely build and operate services by default.
What You’ll Do
- Design, implement, and maintain secure infrastructure services supporting over 30 development teams.
- Design and operate end-to-end encryption strategies across:
- Service-to-service
- Data at rest
- Data in transit
- Develop and manage infrastructure as code using GitOps principles.
- Manage and optimize AWS cloud infrastructure for scalability, reliability, and security.
- Collaborate closely with development teams to ensure effective integration and smooth operations.
- Participate in on-call rotations to ensure infrastructure availability and incident response.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve issues across infrastructure, networks, and applications.
- Implement and maintain best practices for system security, reliability, and performance.
- Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and deliver robust solutions.
What You'll Bring
- Deep understanding of TLS, PKI and certificate chains
- Encryption fundamentals (symmetric/asymmetric, key rotation)
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment
- Experience in platform engineering, site reliability engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language.
- Experience with at least one Infrastructure as Code tool or provider.
- Deep expertise in Amazon Web Services (AWS), including core services such as EC2, S3, VPC, EKS, ALB/ELB, and Transit Gateway.
- Strong Linux engineering skills, including networking, storage, and operating system fundamentals
- Solid understanding of network security fundamentals and experience with CDNs.
- Experience deploying and managing infrastructure through GitOps pipelines.
- Strong problem-solving and debugging abilities in complex distributed systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within compliance and regulatory frameworks (CMMC and FedRamp is a plus).
- Familiarity with additional programming languages such as Go or Java.
- Experience with large-scale distributed systems.
- Knowledge of messaging systems such as RabbitMQ or Kafka.
- Understanding of cloud security best practices.
- Understanding of microservices architectures and distributed systems technologies.

About the position

About the position

Overview
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Core Experiences Team. This team builds and maintains the foundational services and SDKs that power Speechify’s product experience across platforms. What You’ll Do

- Work with product teams, in addition to design and docs, to develop features that align with wider product strategy and customer needs

As we are remote-first and our engineering organization is entirely remote, we provide guidance and meet regularly using video calls, so an independent attitude, good communication skills, and transparency are a must.

You can use modern AI coding assistants as part of your daily workflow (your choice of tools, within security guidelines), backed by a company-funded usage budget so you can iterate quickly without unnecessary friction. Requirements:
- Strong 8+ years of experience with at least one programming language - any major language (Python, .NET, Java, Go, Rust, etc) is acceptable
- Demonstrated working experience in operating high-scale production systems running on Kubernetes and monitoring it, including on-call participation, incident response, and postmortem practices
- Familiarity with observability tooling (e.g. Grafana)
- Strong understanding of time-series data, metrics cardinality challenges, and cost/performance tradeoffs/optimizations in observability systems
- Experience in a hands-on technical leadership role - setting technical direction, leading project teams, and influencing architectural decisions beyond your immediate team
- Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts including scalability, consistency, high availability, and failure modes in large-scale systems
- Experience writing clean, maintainable, robust, and performant software
- Experience with delivering projects from start to finish in a self-driven manner
- Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills
- Strong mentoring and leadership skills
Bonus Points For:
- Experience operating or scaling Prometheus in high-cardinality, multi-tenant environments
- Experience working with OpenTelemetry Collector pipelines or similar telemetry ingestion systems
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)/ Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) or any other Kubernetes related certification from CNCF
- Experience developing Kubernetes operators, controllers, or custom resources
- Strong understanding of metrics collection, visualization, and alerting concepts
- Experience contributing to or maintaining open source projects, with evidence of successful pull requests and community collaboration
- Experience designing and building observability backends for various systems and applications
Compensation & Rewards:
In Canada, the compensation range for this role is CAD 186,368 - 223,642. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed throughout the interview process. All of our roles include Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), giving every team member ownership in Grafana Labs' success. We believe in shared outcomes—RSUs help us stay aligned and invested as we scale globally.
