What you will do in this role

• Design, develop and deploy SaaS services end-to-end—from understanding requirements and designing solutions to deployment, production support, scalability and performance
• Be on the fore front of AI-native SDLC by using agents throughout design, coding, testing, and documentation
• Research new technologies and solutions to improve existing products and explore new directions
• Implement comprehensive automated testing at the component level and collaborate with SDET(s)
• Participate in standards bodies and shape next-generation standards like W3C, WebAuthn, and OAuth
• Work directly with customers - product calls to understand the problems and an on-call rotation of incident escalation

Required Qualifications

Expert-Level

• Java SE 21+ and Spring/Quarkus
• Kubernetes or another container orchestration platform
• Cloud-first development experience—AWS, Azure, or similar
• Datastores, one or more of: MySQL, Oracle, DynamoDB, Redshift, Redis

Strong

• CS algorithms, data structures, clean code, and scalability design patterns
• Scalable services—multi-region, graceful degradation, and elastic capacity
• One major JS framework—Angular, React, or Vue
• Observability techniques and tools—events, metrics, OpenTelemetry
• Continuous deployment methodologies—unit, acceptance, and load testing approaches
• Kotlin development experience

Preferred

• Authentication protocol knowledge is highly valued—OAuth, SAML, WebAuthn, PKI, Kerberos, FIDO/FIDO2
• Keycloak, Ping or Okta authentication server
• One Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tool—Terraform, Helm, AWS CloudFormation
• Dynamically typed language—Python, Ruby, or similar

Experience

10+ years of experience designing, building, and maintaining an enterprise web-based platform that services at least 100K users. Can be SaaS or on-premise

Education

BS/MS in computer science or a related software engineering field.

Your Role

As a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test on the Platform Team, you will be responsible for improving the automated and manual testing infrastructure at Alpaca - helping our developers quickly and reliably deliver new features.

We are looking for experienced engineers who not only understand testing best practices and CI pipelines, but also have in-depth knowledge of Kubernetes and can dig deep into application code when necessary.

Who You Are (must-haves)

• You have 5+ years of experience as a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) or Senior Quality Assurance Engineer. 
• You have written code in strongly typed languages before and have at least 1 year of experience with Go.
• You have built and maintained CI pipelines before - we use a mix of GitHub Actions and Google Cloud Build pipelines.
• You have worked with microservices before and understand the challenges they pose for building reliable integrations and end-to-end tests. You have experience designing and building automated test frameworks.
• You are familiar with Kubernetes beyond the basics - you can write a Helm chart for a new service with relative ease, you understand best practices around security, and you have prior job experience or certifications to prove this.
• You have worked at a startup before - you understand that things don’t always go according to plan, that there is significant technical debt, that some tasks just need to be done, and that sometimes there are no processes or documentation to guide your hand.
• You are not afraid of taking a task from start to finish - gathering requirements, figuring out and implementing the best technical solution, then deploying and monitoring the results.

Who You Might Be (nice-to-haves)

• You have written code in Python or TypeScript. You have experience writing efficient Dockerfiles and building secure container images.
• You have implemented load tests with k6 (REST) and ghz (gRPC) and have experience analyzing pprof/trace output.
• You have done IaC deployments with Argo CD or Terraform, or have used Google Cloud Platform and Google Kubernetes Engine before. You are familiar with Tilt and have written a Kubernetes Operator before.
• You are familiar with testing event-driven systems using Kafka (or even better, Redpanda).

• Develop, maintain, and scale end-to-end automation frameworks for UI, API, and backend services independently with minimal supervision.
• Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines to ensure fast, reliable delivery.

• Collaborate with engineers to improve code testability, reliability, and overall product quality.
• Track and analyze quality metrics, automation coverage, defect trends, and regression risks; recommend improvements.

• Mentor and coach junior QA/SDET engineers, promoting best practices in automation and quality engineering.
• Drive quality initiatives across teams, influencing design and architecture decisions to enhance testability.
• Leverage AI/ML tools for intelligent test generation, prioritization, defect prediction, and test data management.
• Advocate for quality in product planning, release readiness, and post-release analysis.

• Implement & Enhance: Translate requirements into robust, maintainable test automation using Python and Robot Framework. You’ll be expanding our existing suite, not just running static tests.
• Leverage AI Safely: Utilize AI tools (like Cursor) to boost your development velocity. You will be responsible for validating, debugging, and refining all AI-generated code to meet our internal standards.
• Architecture Stewardship: Build out test scenarios using the Page Object Model (POM), ensuring code reuse and long-term maintainability.
• Pipeline Management: Monitor and debug our CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins), ensuring test results are actionable and feedback loops are tight.

What We're Looking For

We need a Quality Engineer who balances technical precision with a forward-thinking    mindset. You don’t just test code; you build systems that ensure long-term stability.

• Software Quality Expertise: 3–5 years of experience in software quality engineering, with deep hands-on expertise in test automation frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Selenium) and testing libraries.
• Engineering Proficiency: Strong coding skills in Python or JavaScript. You don't just write scripts; you write clean, modular, and maintainable code.
• Architectural Awareness: You understand the "why" behind patterns like Page Object Model and can implement them independently to create scalable testing suites.
• Technical Ecosystem: Solid understanding of the SDLC, Agile practices, and CI/CD pipelines. You have experience working with cloud environments (GCP or Azure), relational databases (SQL), and developer tools like GitHub Actions.
• AI-First Mindset: You’ve experimented with AI coding tools and understand their limitations. You know that while AI can generate a script in seconds, a human engineer is required to ensure it is reliable, secure, and optimized for intelligent test coverage and defect prediction.
• Security & Collaboration: You respect the "guardrails" for eg: data security and environment separation are second nature to you. You thrive in cross-functional environments, partnering with architects and stakeholders to solve complex problems.
• Mentorship: You have a passion for mentoring junior team members and fostering a culture of quality across the engineering organization. 
• Experience working in a clinical trial industry or healthcare is a huge plus
