Senior Engineering Manager - Release Engineering

Every line of code that ships at Mercury passes through a gauntlet of builds, tests, and gates before it reaches our customers. On the surface, that process should feel seamless — frictionless for engineers, undetectable to users, and impossibly reliable. Behind that invisibility is Release Engineering.
Mercury moves fast. We ship frequently, our monorepo grows daily, and the pressure to do it right never lets up. Release Engineering is the team that makes this possible: owning the CI/CD platform, build infrastructure, deployment tooling, and the practices that let 400+ engineers deliver with confidence.
We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead this team. You'll partner with the Backend Developer Experience team to deliver the full software delivery lifecycle from code commit to production, and build the engineering culture that keeps our release process a competitive advantage rather than a bottleneck.
In this role you will:
- Lead and grow a team of four engineers focused on CI/CD infrastructure, build systems, deployment automation, and developer tooling.
- Create a strong culture of operational excellence, with measurable improvements to pipeline reliability, build times, and deployment confidence.
- Own Mercury's release pipeline end-to-end — from pull request merge to production — ensuring it is fast, reliable, observable, and secure.
- Drive the strategy and execution for improving build performance, test reliability, deployment safety (canaries, feature flags, rollbacks), and developer velocity.
- Partner closely with Platform, Security, and Product Engineering teams to design and deliver systems that meet the demands of a rapidly scaling fintech.
- Establish and evangelize release engineering best practices across Mercury's engineering org — defining standards for deployment frequency, change failure rate, and MTTR.
- Balance long-term platform investments with the day-to-day reliability needs of 400+ engineers shipping code every day.
- Build and maintain tooling that enforces compliance checkpoints and audit trails as part of the release pipeline — without slowing teams down.
- Hire, mentor, and retain top-tier engineers; help them grow into technical leads and raise the overall bar for the team.
You should have:
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years managing engineering teams in high-growth or high-availability environments.
- Deep hands-on experience with CI/CD systems (e.g., Buildkite, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI) and the infrastructure that supports them.
- Strong background in build systems (Bazel, Buck2), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi, or similar).
- A track record of meaningfully improving release velocity and reliability — you measure what matters and use data to drive decisions.
- Experience operating in regulated or security-sensitive environments, ideally fintech, payments, or banking.
- Excellent cross-functional communication skills — you can translate between engineering depth and business impact, and you partner effectively with Security, Compliance, and Product leaders.
- A pragmatic philosophy: you believe release infrastructure should be a force multiplier for product engineers, not a bureaucratic hurdle.
- The ability to attract, develop, and retain exceptional talent — you take hiring and team development seriously.
What Success Looks Like:
In your first 90 days, you've developed deep context on Mercury's release infrastructure, built trust with your team, and identified the highest-leverage opportunities to improve pipeline performance and developer experience.
Within six months, you've shipped meaningful improvements to build reliability, deployment speed, or observability — and your team has a clear roadmap for the next year.
Over time, you've made Mercury's release process a model for how fintech companies can move fast without breaking things.
Our salary and equity ranges are highly competitive within the SaaS and fintech industry and are updated regularly using the most reliable compensation survey data for our industry. New hire offers are made based on a job candidate’s experience, expertise, geographic location, and internal pay equity relative to peers.
Our target new hire base salary ranges for this role are the following:
- US employees (any location): $239,000 - 298,800
- Canadian employees (any location): CAD $225,900 - 282,400

As a senior member of our infrastructure team, you will be equipped with essential tools and technologies designed for scaling and enhancing Mercury's infrastructure:
- AWS Services: Proficiently utilize EC2, RDS, IAM, Networking, Opensearch, and ECS to build and manage robust cloud environments.
- Terraform: Leverage Terraform for infrastructure as code to efficiently manage and provision our cloud resources.
- Agentic Infrastructure: Build the frameworks around using AI safely in our infrastructure, both for the agents and the users that kick off those agents.
- Monitoring and Observability Tools: Employ Prometheus, Grafana, Opensearch, and OpenTelemetry to maintain high availability and monitor system health.
- Version Control and CI/CD: Manage code and automate deployments using GitHub & GitHub Actions.
As we gear up for the next stages of Mercury's growth, you will:
- Build our “Infrastructure Platform” to support the growing needs of the Engineering Organization.
- Focus on building a platform that is AI friendly while still usable for engineers. We want our users to be humans and Agents.
- Lead key infrastructure projects, break-down complex initiatives, and define our infrastructure strategy through detailed RFCs and technical specifications.
Must haves:
- You have 5+ years of experience with AWS
- You have extensive experience, ideally 3 years or more, with observability and monitoring tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry, optimizing system performance and reliability.
- You have demonstrated ability in technical writing, with at least 3 years of experience creating detailed technical documentation, RFCs, and tech specs that clearly communicate complex ideas.
The ideal candidate should:
- You bring at least 2 years of experience leading infrastructure projects in regulated environments such as HITRUST or SOC2, ensuring compliance and security.
- You have 3+ years of experience managing large-scale Terraform implementations, including the setup and maintenance of Terraform CI/CD pipelines.
- You have 2+ years of experience writing code. We are building an Infrastructure Platform from scratch and there is plenty of code to write to support that.
- Experience mentoring and elevating those around you, we are force multipliers for the engineering org.

Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Product Engineers to establish test plans and identify gaps in manual and automated testing
- Work closely with Software Development Engineers to improve software quality by writing and executing automated tests
- Create and maintain automated tests for functional, performance, scalability, and durability testing
- Design and develop integration and regression test cases for software components
- Analyze test failures, troubleshoot issues, and make necessary repairs to test code
- Measure test coverage and analyze continuous integration test results
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of automated test frameworks
- Advocate for quality throughout the software development process
- Evaluate and recommend test tools and technologies to improve testing efficiency
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience with object-oriented programming concepts
- Proficiency programming in one or more of the following languages: Swift or Kotlin
- Applied knowledge of testing principles, including experience designing and executing test cases
- Proficiency using test automation frameworks such as XCTest, XCUITest, UiAutomator, Compose Testing, or Appium
- Proficiency with Android Studio or Xcode
- Familiarity with mocking frameworks
- Familiarity with CI/CD patterns and tooling (such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions) and source control management (such as GitHub)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate and resolve software issues
- Effective organizational, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, geography, GIS, mathematics, or a related field
