Senior Engineering Manager, Code Generation

The Application Modernization Platform (AMP) team is tackling one of the industry's most critical challenges: leveraging Generative AI to transform rigid, legacy applications into modern, microservices-based architectures powered by MongoDB. A core difficulty in legacy code transformation is guaranteeing the equivalence of the new application's business logic, ensuring it operates smoothly and efficiently with the new MongoDB data ecosystems in a reliable and scalable manner. The success of this mission heavily relies on the essential tools developed by the CodeGen team.
We are looking for an experienced Senior Lead Software Engineer with a strong background in database ecosystem, reshaping complex large-scale services and team leadership. You will lead a talented team building a complex product suite using GenAI capabilities. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical leader who can drive architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and collaborate closely with product management to deliver a product that solves our customers' most challenging application transformation problems.
This role will be based in North America west coast, and offers a hybrid working model.
The ideal candidate for this role will have
- 10+ years of software development and operations experience, with a focus on building platforms and distributable software infrastructure
- 2+ years of experience leading, coaching, and mentoring a team of software engineers to achieve high-impact results
- Extensive product experience in building enterprise-grade analytics systems for data streaming or data tooling
- Extensive experience with relational and document data modeling and hands-on experience with at least one SQL database (Postgres, MySQL, etc) and at least one document database (e.g. MongoDB)
- Having experience in using GenAI in building complex large-scale systems, and knowing what GenAI is best suited to do, is a plus
- Curiosity, a positive attitude, and a drive to continue learning
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent time and project management skills including the ability to make realistic assessments of project cost and complexity
Position Expectations
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, quality, and continuous improvement
- Drive the architectural vision and long-term technical roadmap for the Code Gen product suite, ensuring it is scalable, reliable, and performant
- Collaborate closely with Product Managers and other stakeholders to define product features and translate business requirements into robust technical designs
- Lead the design and implementation of complex, mission-critical components of AMP’s code transformation toolset
- Champion and enforce engineering best practices through design reviews, code reviews, and by setting a high standard for quality and operational excellence
- Act as a hands-on leader, guiding the team through complex technical challenges and contributing to the codebase where necessary
Success Measures
Within the first three months, you will have:
- Fully ramped up on our architecture, business domain, and team processes
- Establish yourself as the technical leader within the team, actively driving technical discussions, design reviews, and planning for the product roadmap
- Begin mentoring team members and building strong collaborative relationships with your product counterparts

As companies modernise legacy workloads and data ecosystems, they are increasingly drawn to the flexibility and scalability of the document model. The tools developed by the Code Generation and Data Migration team are critical in this journey, helping customers with schema modeling, code generation, initial data loads, and continuous data synchronization.
We're looking for a Senior Engineer with a strong background in computer science fundamentals, systems design, experience in the Java ecosystem, streaming systems, and data-intensive applications to join our engineering team. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing, building, and optimizing the underlying data structures, algorithms, and database interactions that power our generative AI platform, code generation and migration tools. This involves crafting sophisticated orchestration layers, robust integration points, and high-performance data systems that seamlessly connect and leverage advanced AI capabilities for code generation and building a sophisticated data migration suite using a modern technology stack, which includes Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, Debezium, and React.You will work on critical components that ensure the scalability, efficiency, and reliability of our services, collaborating closely with AI researchers, product management and other engineers to design and implement cutting-edge products that solve complex customer challenges.
This role will be based out of North America in the PST and MST zones only.
The ideal candidate for this role will have
- 2+ years of engineering experience in backend systems, distributed systems, or core platform development
- Experience in one or several of Java, Rust, C/C++, and/or Python, with a strong understanding of systems-level programming, memory management, and performance tuning
- Experience with streaming data platforms such as Apache Kafka and Change Data Capture (CDC) tools like Debezium
- Experience with relational data modeling and hands-on experience with at least one SQL database (Postgres, MySQL, etc)
- Exposure to client-side technologies such as JavaScript and React is a plus
- Good understanding of algorithms, data structures and their time and space complexity
- Curiosity, a positive attitude, and a drive to continue learning
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with cloud-native distributed systems (e.g., Kubernetes)
- Experience with NoSQL databases and understanding of their trade-offs is great, but not required. We'll teach you NoSQL

Position Expectations
- Contribute high-quality, well-tested backend code to the data migration engine and core components of our generative AI orchestration platform
- Collaborate effectively with Product Management, AI researchers and machine learning engineers and designers to build and deliver on the product roadmap
- Work to develop robust and efficient backend services that orchestrate AI functionalities
- Identify and address performance bottlenecks and architectural challenges in our systems, particularly within data flow and orchestration
- Participate actively in code reviews to enforce best practices and patterns
- Help troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues in our distributed systems
- Give and solicit feedback on technical design documents and pull requests
- Perform tasks related to process such as CI/CD, quality, testing, etc
Success Measures
Within the first three months, you will have:
- Familiarize yourself with the MongoDB database and aggregation language
- Familiarize yourself with the backend tech stack including Java, Spring Boot, and Kafka
- Set up software development infrastructure (tech stack, build tools, etc) to enable development using the relevant tech stacks
- Started collaborating with your peers and contributed to code reviews
Within six months, you will have:
- Familiarised yourself with the rest of our the application modernization tool stack
- Delivered at least one large scale feature that spans the entire tech stack
- Reviewed and contributed to scope and technical design documents
Within 12 months, you will have:
- Become a key contributor to our backend stack, capable of taking on complex features independently
- Helped recruit and interview new members of the team

What You'll Do
As part of your role, you would improve and establish new monitoring, alerting, and observability of services using a wide range of tools. Additionally, you would handle critical alerts and incidents and work directly with R&D to improve and optimize availability.
- Research Fireblocks blockchain workflows, identify optimization opportunities, issues, and improve monitoring.
- Help identify root causes for incidents and prevent them from happening again. Solve and orchestrate outages by working with multiple teams.

- Work closely with the R&D and Support: offering education and guidance on integration, support, and monitoring across the toolset
- Communicate and escalate issues to senior management in R&D and support, write RCAs, and define next steps.

The SRE Incident Response team is responsible for handling critical application\infrastructure alerts, orchestrating the war room process and enabling first class observability and alerting systems.
Team members are located in several international locations (“follow the sun” model) to provide 24/7 availability.

On-call coverage is 7 days a week, starting at noon, with the shift ending at 6:00pm.
