Do you want to build software that controls real-world warehouse automation (WES/WCS)? Are you excited to own customer-facing features end-to-end—from requirements through production rollout? KPI is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our Software Group on a 6-month contract-to-hire basis. You’ll help design, develop, and evolve our Warehouse Execution and Control Systems (WES/WCS), software that serves as the central nervous system for advanced materials-handling environments.
This role is a great fit for a senior engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and working directly with customers on real-world automation solutions.
What You’ll Do
- Design, develop, and customize KPI’s Warehouse Execution and Control System (WES/WCS) for new and existing customers.
- Collaborate with internal teams on analysis, architecture, development, and testing of software solutions.
- Work directly with customers to gather requirements and implement tailored system customizations.
- Participate in the evolution of software architecture, tools, and frameworks working with technologies such as Java, Angular, Spring/Spring-based microservices, MS SQL Server, RESTful APIs, and JDBC/iBatis/Stored Procedures.
- Support system configuration, solution analysis, and occasional end-user training at client sites (approximately 25% travel).
- Communicate effectively across engineering, product, and stakeholder teams.
- Develop deep expertise in materials handling automation and warehouse technologies.

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5-7 years of professional software development experience.
- Strong experience with Java, Angular, and SQL (or similar tech stacks).
- Proven expertise writing and maintaining complex SQL queries.
- Experience developing resilient Springbased microservices.
- Solid understanding of API design for clientserver applications, including RESTful APIs.
- Proactive mindset around best practices, security, and modern development approaches.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.

As a Senior Pre-Sales Systems Engineer, you will play a crucial role in understanding our customers' unique challenges and tailoring Everpure solutions to meet their specific needs. Collaborating closely with the sales team, you will act as a technical expert during the sales process, helping to showcase the value of our products and services.
The selected candidate must reside in the Cincinnati/Dayton area.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Develop an exhaustive understanding of what drives a customer’s business and what motivates their decision making
- Connect the dots from technology solutions, inclusive of the Everpure portfolio and others from the ecosystem, to measurable customer business outcomes
- Partner closely with account managers, specialists and channel partners to create a seamless and holistic customer experience and strategy to drive revenue growth and net new business
- Delight customers and teammates with your technical leadership and domain expertise on storage products, distributed storage architectures, file systems, and competitive storage offerings in the DAS, NAS and SAN product spaces
- Take control of evaluations, benchmarks and system configurations
- Build and deliver technical product and architecture presentations with vigor to customers and lock in the technical win with clients and prospective accounts
- Capture requirements and translate Customer’s business needs into innovative solutions to accelerate their growth and capacity
- Seek out and spur new opportunities for interoperability, functional, and performance testing/validation
- Promote mutual roadmap and planning exchanges
- Liaise with product and technical marketing to produce materials (i.e. whitepaper, web presentations) that support overall alliance plans and objectives
- Stay current with the competition and ensure that materials accurately reflect the latest, differentiated solution positioning
- Move with market trends and competitive landscape to promote thought leadership within our organization

WHAT YOU BRING:
- Pre-sales experience is required
- 5 or more years of relevant experience, mixed among technology, design, and communications required. Experience supporting the sales of enterprise storage, networking, systems, cloud, or software to enterprise accounts preferred
- Deep understanding of the architecture, design and implementation of multi-tiered client/server and web-based computing solutions
- Must have a familiarity with modern web architecture a plus (LAMP stack, scale-out vs scale-up architectures, AWS well-architected framework, microservices architecture)
- Prior experience in targeting new prospects and converting them into clients
- Contribute significant portions and/or lead responses to RFPs, RFQs and RFIs
- Superior knowledge of current and emerging storage architectures (FC, iSCSI, NAS, OSD, SAN)
- Previous experience with Linux, NFS file systems and Linux distributed network environment
- Installation/configuration of distributed computing, multiprocessing, virtual memory subsystem, storage subsystems architecture, shared memory architectures, cache architectures, windowing systems
- Strong knowledge of digital transformation to a Cloud Native architecture, On-Prem, Public Cloud, Provisioning Automation, and Containers
- Knowledge of VMware, Local Area Networking, Ethernet, TCP/IP and general networking
- Familiarity with AWS, Azure, GCP, containers, k8s and microservices architectures a plus
- Curiosity and passion around technology and explaining and showing new technology platforms and concepts to customers
- Familiarity with storage-intensive applications and their requirements such as structured databases (SQL, Oracle) is highly desirable
- Excellent verbal and written interpersonal skills

ABOUT THE JOB
As a Software Engineer in the Manufacturing Test organization, you will join a software development team tasked to ensure that we build quality products - in land, sea, and air. You will develop test executive software that can systematically and thoroughly test our products and create analytics to improve our development cycle. You will champion automation, and work to reduce operator time and instruction complexity through the use of parallel execution, data acquisition, automated deployment tools. You will be presented complex, multiplatform problems with heavy reliance on cloud data systems. In this role you’ll need to think creatively and continuously improve our methods of automation, throughput, user interfaces, and data analytics.
This role will be based temporarily at Santa Ana, CA for a 3 month training period before transitioning to Asheville, OH.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Develop applications for Windows and Linux desktop environments
- Integrate cloud data and deployment features while maintaining user authentication and security
- Generate automation scripts (python) for debug and prototype development
- Triage issues, root cause failures, and coordinate next-steps
- Partner with end-users to turn needs into features while balancing user experience with engineering constraints
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Expertise in desktop application development with WPF and C#.
- Proficient in ASP.NET, RESTful services with C# in AWS/Azure infrastructure.
- Hands-on working knowledge of a major relational database (DB2, SQL Server etc.) and/or NoSql.
- Experience working in CI/CD and designing and delivering DevOps automation for app deployment and testing.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field.
- Experience working on multi-disciplinary projects, working closely with Electrical / Mechanical / Manufacturing Engineers.
- Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.

- Deliver an excellent customer experience in all interactions
- Resolve new and escalated service tickets, provide guidance for or personally resolve aging and complex issues

- Work with vendor representatives to resolve software and hardware issues
- Install and/or upgrade Microsoft Windows Server Operating Systems
- Perform advanced virus, malware and ransomware mediation
- Provide professional quality server room cable management
- Responsible for creating and maintaining high quality, detailed documentation
- Resolve backup issues and perform restore testing
- Install, configure, support complex virtual environments with High Availability in VMWare ESXi and Hyper-V environments
- Work with clients to harden security posture through policy and advanced technologies according to Abacus standards and processes
- Communicate with clients as required: Keeping them informed of incident progress, notifying them of impending changes or agreed upon outages
- Take part in after hours
- On Call rotation as needed – must have a minimum of 6 months experience at Abacus and have supervisor approval before joining rotation.

- Perform on-site technical and customer service support, to include:
- Emergency/unscheduled repairs of clients’ on-site technical systems and equipment

- Diagnoses, troubleshoots, repairs, and debugs complex technical and computer systems, and software
- Follow standard procedures to isolate and fix problems in malfunctioning equipment or software.
- Performs routine cleanup of client network closets including labeling, removal of unneeded equipment, and updating of documentation
- Demonstrate proficiency in reporting activities, maintaining local spare parts inventories, recording time and travel expense records and client log records
- Exhibit adaptability and is willing to alter shifts and job requirements to meet the needs of clients and Abacus
- Comply with all safety requirements, including but not limited to: completing all required training, following all guidance provided in Abacus policies, procedures, field guidelines, reporting requirements, and technical advisories. Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Associates degree in technology related field OR equivalent combination of education and work experience

- Required certifications: Network +, Server +, Windows Server 70-410, 98-365 or equivalent
- Complete other technical and professional development as outlined in development plan
- Understanding of Windows 2016/2012/2008 servers, Active Directory, SQL, Sharepoint, Exchange Servers, Backup Technologies, Internet/DNS/E-mail/Communication issues
- Knowledge of VMWare, Citrix, VPN and Terminal Services
