The Role:

We are looking for an eager Senior Staff Software Engineer excited to dive in and help build and support the cutting edge technology systems of the Lending Finance Platform team, which support our Capital Markets and Accounting business functions. As a senior staff software engineer, you will be part of a team that is empowered to make technical decisions that have direct impact on the success of the business. You will be in the middle of it all – working with partner teams in Lending Engineering and Data Science, implementing new functionality, architecting our system, squashing bugs, maintaining the health of our code, delivering scalable and highly-available services, and continually growing as an engineer. What You’ll Do:

Hands-on Engineering/ Technical Leadership & Strategy

• Write production-grade, scalable backend code using Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, and modern frameworks.
• Debug and resolve complex systems issues in high-scale, real-time services.
• Develop APIs, services, and platform infrastructure that support loan servicing, payment schedules, and operational workflows.
• Drive hands-on delivery of critical projects like schedule generation, batching frameworks, and testing infrastructure.
• Architect platform-level services and improve systems for resilience, observability, and extensibility.
• Make high-leverage engineering decisions that balance speed, quality, and maintainability.

Raise the bar on engineering quality through hands-on contributions, design reviews, and technical mentorship.

Team Collaboration & Mentorship

• Partner with product, design, operations, and other engineering teams to build solutions that deliver business value and customer impact.
• Contribute to cross-functional platform efforts (e.g., onboarding, credit bureau reporting, collections APIs).
• Drive alignment on technical strategy and execution, with strong written and verbal communication.

What You’ll Need:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years experience as a software engineer, designing and implementing complex software solutions.
• Experience with React / Java / Spring / Kotlin / PostgreSQL / AWS. Expertise with any modern Java frameworks, REST APIs, and relational databases
• Deep understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and best practices for building scalable and robust applications.
• Proven experience in leading and mentoring engineering teams, promoting technical excellence and collaboration.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences.
• Experience with Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, Spring Boot, cloud infrastructure, Terraform and CI/CD

Nice to have:

• Experience in financial services or fintech (loan servicing, payments, interest calculations, credit reporting, etc.)
• Experience with Temporal, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, and CI/CD tooling.
• Exposure to data analytics or machine learning platforms.
• Familiarity with front-end technologies such as React, Scala, or Flutter.

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

onX is seeking a Staff Software Engineer who will contribute to meaningful, real-world outcomes that have a lasting impact for customers and the business. In this role, you’ll focus on the design, development, and scaling of our core AI/ML platforms and product-facing services as part of the AI Foundations Team, supporting the integration of cutting-edge artificial intelligence solutions across onX's product lines. WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Work on the design, development, and deployment of large-scale AI systems and services, including models, pipelines, product experiences and infrastructure.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 3 years focused on building and scaling production AI/ML systems, is required.
• Expertise in building scalable backend systems.
• Deep knowledge of MLOps practices, cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure), and CI/CD pipelines for machine learning models and the common inference APIs/SDKs and frameworks.
• Experience with modern AI technologies, including Large Language Models (LLMs) and their various architectures, methods such as RAG, vector databases, and the common AI stack including TensorFlow/Keras, PyTorch, Transformers, etc.
• A strong curiosity for exploring new technologies, including AI

ADDED BONUSES

Though not required, we would be thrilled to consider candidates with any of the following:

• A history of engaging in AI development, from the early ML/NN (YOLO, Darknet) to the LLM era.
• Experience in monitoring and debugging production AI systems (inference, evals, judging, benchmarks) including cost and performance optimizations.
• Interest or experience in edge/on-device inference (MLX, JAX, transformers on TPU/NPU, etc.)
• Interest, experience or experimentation in training/fine-tuning transformer/diffusion models, dataset curation and captioning, etc.

HOW YOU’LL BE COMPENSATED

onX is committed to compensating all employees fairly and equitably for their contributions.  Applicants can expect to make between $169,000 to $211,000 upon hire. The pay range will vary based on experience, skills, certifications, and education among other factors as required in the job description. In addition, full-time onX employees are eligible for a grant of common share options with a vesting schedule and a potential annual bonus of 10% based on company performance.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

The Staff Data Engineer is a senior leader responsible for designing and evolving core components of onX’s lakehouse and data platform. This role focuses on how data is structured, governed, secured, and described so that analytics, product features, and AI systems can operate reliably at scale.

This engineer operates at the intersection of data architecture, metadata, governance, and security, leading complex initiatives and setting technical direction within the Data Engineering organization. They are a trusted technical partner to Product, Analytics, Data Science, Security, and Platform teams, and serve as a force multiplier for other engineers through high-level technical guidance and active mentorship.

As an onX Data Engineer, your day to day responsibilities would look like:

Technical Leadership & Architecture

• Design and evolve the Iceberg-based lakehouse architecture to balance scalability, cost, performance, and maintainability.
• Define and promote standards for table design, partitioning, schema evolution, optimization, and data layout.
• Lead architectural efforts spanning batch, streaming, and event-driven data processing where they deliver business value.
• Drive the design and delivery of complex, cross-team initiatives, enabling teams to move independently within established architectural guidance.
• Build vs. Buy: Evaluate and integrate technologies.

Metadata, Governance & Open Standards

• Define how datasets, pipelines, features, and models are described, related, and governed using shared metadata.
• Lead the adoption and integration of open-source metadata and catalog tools (e.g., OpenMetadata or similar ecosystems).
• Establish metadata standards that enable self-service analytics, governance, and AI readiness.
• Partner with BI and Analytics to ensure domain models are clearly documented and aligned to business language.
• Collaborate with Data Science to ensure model inputs, features, and outputs are traceable, explainable, and reusable.

Security, Access Control & Compliance

• Design and evolve security and access-control models for Apache Iceberg, including table-, column-, and row-level controls.
• Partner with Security and Platform teams to embed policy enforcement directly into data access paths.
• Drive metadata-driven authorization patterns that scale across tools and user groups.
• Ensure privacy, compliance, and regulatory requirements are incorporated into platform design.
• Balance strong security guarantees with usability to support safe self-service.
  
  

Platform Reliability & Operations

• Build and maintain automation for compaction, retention, lifecycle management, and cost controls.
• Establish observability standards that connect pipeline health, data quality, and reliability metrics.
• Provide architectural oversight during critical incidents and drive long-term 'Keep the Lights On' (KTLO) reduction.
• Recommend tooling and process improvements based on industry standards and operational experience.

Organizational Impact & Collaboration

• Align technical work with business priorities by understanding how data supports onX products and customer outcomes.
• Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to engineers, product partners, and leadership.
• Lead and participate in architecture and design reviews, setting a high bar for technical rigor.
• Foster strong cross-team collaboration across Data Engineering, Platform, Security, Analytics, and Data Science.
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, raising the technical bar across the team.

LOCATION

onX has created a thriving distributed workforce community across several US locations. This position can be performed from an onX corporate office, “Basecamp,” or “Connection Hub.” 

• Corporate Offices: onX was founded in Montana with offices in Missoula and Bozeman. If you prefer to work in an office at least part of the time this is a great option.
• Basecamps: Basecamps are established virtual workforce communities where a sizable number of distributed team members group for work, volunteering, socializing, and adventure.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
• Deep industry experience (typically 12+ years) building and operating large-scale data systems.
• Deep expertise in distributed data systems and data architecture.
• Strong experience with Apache Iceberg and similar table formats (Delta Lake, Hudi).
• Proven experience designing secure and governed data platforms.
• Expertise in Python, SQL, and orchestration patterns (e.g., Airflow).
• Experience working with data ecosystems, including metadata, catalog, or governance tooling.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Deep experience in at least one major cloud environment (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
• Familiarity with cloud-native data services such as query engines, stream/batch processing systems, and object storage–based lakehouses.

COMPENSATION

onX is committed to compensating all employees fairly and equitably for their contributions. For this position, applicants can expect to make between $175,000 to $218,000 upon hire. The pay range will vary based on experience, skills, certifications, and education among other factors as required in the job description. In addition, full-time onX employees are eligible for a grant of common share options with a vesting schedule and a potential annual bonus of 10% based on company performance.
