We are looking for a talented and inquisitive Principal Firmware Engineer / Team Lead whose drive for learning and determination for continuous improvement aligns with our ambitious, fast-growing and transforming company. Based in Melbourne, you will be a key player in the Research & Development team that designs the wearable tracking hardware that Catapult is famous for. You will be working with the most cutting edge technology and integrating components across our wearables and stadium infrastructure. Reporting to the Engineering Director, the primary responsibility of the Principal Firmware Engineer / Team Lead is to develop firmware solutions for the elite sports industry. You will be responsible for the firmware development cycle and to ensure that our products have a high level of quality.

Our engineers drive this ethos by making sure all of this technology comes together in a way our customers love to use.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Lead a team which brings up new hardware from scratch, and develops device trees and boot chains.
- Develop Linux kernel for ARM Cortex-A hardware platforms, and wireless firmware for ARM Cortex hardware platforms.
- Lead team DevOps practices, engineering processes, and design discussions with the view of continuously lifting quality and improving.
- Drive best practices around code quality and organization throughout the entire development process and in coordination with team objectives.
- Promote innovation, lead technical strategy and architecture planning, discussion, and collaboration through documentation.
- Providing technical guidance, career development, and mentoring to team members.
- Take a player-coach approach to leadership, be a multiplier and have a passion for team and team members’ success.
- Partner with product managers to align on objectives, priorities, tradeoffs and risk.
- Ensure teams have clear priorities and adequate resources to execute on plan.
- Work in multidisciplinary teams and interface with other engineers in our team and across various disciplines to create alignment.
- Lead firmware engineering “chapters” where best practice is shared amongst other firmware engineers within the business.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Formal qualifications in electronics or software engineering.
- At least 5-10 years of firmware development experience.
- Demonstrated experience programming with C, C++ and Python.
- Demonstrated Linux (e.g. Yocto/PetaLinux) experience including building the kernel, developing custom kernels, device trees, and developing Linux drivers.
- Demonstrated experience with common wireless communications standards and protocols, such as BLE, Wi-Fi, UWB and long range/low bit rate applications.
- Experience developing products, scaling them and supporting them throughout the entire lifecycle.
- Experience bringing up new hardware from scratch.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational and time management skills.
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and product management to understand requirements, describe firmware product features, and technical designs.
- Ability to be nimble, proactive, comfortable working with minimal specifications.
- A solid understanding of what high performance looks like, and how to drive it.
- Experience with Atlassian’s platform for defect tracking and documentation is highly desired.
- Experience with Git code management is highly desired.
- Experience with Rust or a willingness to learn it is highly desirable.
- Occasionally providing technical support to customers (which may be on the weekend or after hours).

About the Job
Staff Software Engineers lead the delivery of a variety of software integrated in to our products, acting as technical leads, extremely senior individual contributors, and/or as team leads that are also hands-on contributors. This includes autonomy, simulation, data processing, payload integration, and off-board command and control and decision support. We expect Staff Software Engineers to demonstrate unparalleled end-to-end outcome ownership, driving the rapid architecting, design, delivery, support, and evolution of next generation autonomous platforms through their entire product life-cycle.
What You’ll Do
- Own customer success through the design and delivery of a multi-year, multi-stakeholder software roadmap that spans across multiple teams.
- Leverage internal product and program-specific engineering teams to rapidly deliver capability beyond the scope of current platforms, with a clear path for both architecture and capability evolution over time
- Partner with external teams, collaborating on interfacing requirements between diverse systems and technologies
- Drive architecture selection and design for robotic systems, including hardware selection, compute, storage and network architecture, service orchestration and other software platform concerns that balance constraints, restrictions and requirements in a multi-stakeholder environment
- Contribute to the design and development of a company wide roadmap for software inputs to autonomous systems
- Lead teams that develop software that runs on- and off- platform, using a variety of technologies
- Act as a subject matter expert for software engineering, representing software equities in a multi-stakeholder environment including engineering, business and sales leadership.
- Drive the design and implementation of development processes for the initial delivery and subsequent iteration of software, including full lifecycle testing
- Drive the creation of test and simulation fixtures that operate with both software- and hardware-in-the-loop
- Support vehicle manufacturing and deployment
- Lead teams of multi-disciplinary engineers, including as a mentor for Senior Software Engineers from differing backgrounds
- Travel to co-locate with end-users and/or other teams up to 20% of the time
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Engineering, a relevant field, or equivalent experience
- Experience in a leadership position within a high performing technology organization
- Extensive professional experience working as a Software Engineer with one or more domains and/or technologies of expertise
- Systems and/or application programming skills including algorithms, data structures, concurrency, scaling, testing, infrastructure, software design and system design
- Experience troubleshooting and analyzing remotely deployed software systems
- Capacity to work holistically on software enabled capabilities up and down the software stack and through lifecycle through design, implementation, operation and sustainment
- Capacity to act as the technical owner for an entire software system, including stakeholder engagement, requirements definition, roadmap management, team co-ordination, design, implementation, sustainment and evolution
- Capacity to learn and grow individually, while mentoring senior team members effectively, building team cohesion and capacity
- Ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a senior role for the delivery of a military mission system
- Experience writing backend services or embedded software in C++, Rust and/or Go
- Experience writing frontend applications using Typescript and React
- Experience with the design, implementation and operation of horizontally scaled cloud technologies
- Experience with the design, implementation and support of embedded software, particularly in the field of robotics
- Experience with modeling and simulation
- Experience with development of high assurance safety critical software
- Experience within the product delivery lifecycle including manufacturing, system acceptance, deployment, and sustainment.
- Familiarity with Systems Engineering concepts
- Desire to learn and grow in to other roles that require experience as a Staff Software Engineer, such as Principal Software Engineer and/or Senior Manager, Software Engineering
- Desire to grow in to a Tech-Lead-Manager role, with responsibility for line management of engineers, in addition to delivery

STR is hiring a Principal Software Reverse Engineer who has a passion for research and analysis of vulnerabilities in cyber physical systems. What you’ll do:
- Reverse engineering complex software or firmware targets, ranging from typical Windows/Linux binaries to embedded firmware running non-traditional computer architectures and operating systems
- Developing and applying automated reverse engineering and binary analysis tools to characterize protocols, interfaces, and functionality of target systems
- Developing innovative cybersecurity solutions
- Leading multi-discipline teams to tackle challenging problems from a wide variety of technologies to develop innovative cybersecurity solutions
- Performing vulnerability weaponization, exploit development, payload development, and exploit mitigation on a variety of challenging targets
- Technical marketing to existing and potential customers
- Technical proposal development (idea generation, writing, reviewing, editing)
- Documenting, demonstrating, and presenting research
- Solving real world problems that have an impact on national security
Who you are:
- This position requires an Active Top Secret (TS) security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by the U.S. Government.
- Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity or related field plus a minimum of 15 years relevant experience
(MS or PhD with equivalent work experience may also be considered) - Substantial experience leading technical teams on advanced reverse engineering and exploitation programs
- Experience with binary analysis of software/firmware
- Experience with disassembly tools, such as IDA Pro, Binary Ninja, or Ghidra
- Proficiency in multiple Assembly Languages: x86, ARM, etc.
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages: C/C++, Python, etc.
- Deep understanding of reverse engineering fundamentals
- Experience in Vulnerability research and analysis
- Knowledge of weaponizing discovered vulnerabilities into exploits
Nice to haves:
- Implant or software patch development
- Familiarity with binary emulation or vulnerability research, including tools such as QEMU or AFL++
- Experience with DSP architectures, such as Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics, NXP, or Analog Devices.
- Knowledge of operating system internals including memory/process/thread management
- Embedded systems or firmware analysis
- Experience development custom emulation tools to enable dynamic analysis
- Disassembler/decompiler module development
- Experience analyzing and reconstructing code/data flow
- Automated reverse engineering or software analysis tool development
- Experience debugging software without source code
