The Role:
We are looking for a Staff Scientist – Quantum Applications to lead the technical development in utilizing IonQ’s quantum computers to create highly differentiated quantum solutions that will bring value to society. As a Staff Scientist – Quantum Applications, you will be part of the new Quantum Applications team based in College Park, Maryland , you will be a key link to the University of Maryland ecosystem, serving as a bridge to collaborate with world-class faculty and researchers both at UMD and at institutions globally.
You will operate at the intersection of two frontiers: pushing the boundaries of cutting-edge academic research on latest quantum hardwares and developing the next generation of quantum algorithms poised to solve real-world problems better than state-of-the-art classical methods. You will play a key role in developing core IP, computational resource models, long-term roadmaps and end-to-end workflows that have the potential to disrupt the field of computing. You will also work closely with product, engineering, marketing, sales, operations, and external customers/partners to brainstorm new ideas, propose complex, multi-year initiatives and represent IonQ at high-visibility technical conferences (often all in a single day)!
Responsibilities:
- Practical Algorithm Innovation: Lead the hands-on development of Fault-Tolerant Application-Scale Quantum (FASQ) algorithms designed to scale for real-world impact. You will emphasize "hardware-aware" FASQ, ensuring research is rooted in the constraints of practical early fault-tolerant systems to drive scientific and commercial breakthroughs.
- Full-Stack & Hardware-Centric Optimization: Work directly with quantum compiler, cloud, and hardware engineering teams to build highly optimized hybrid workflows specifically tuned for IonQ’s trapped-ion architecture. Your goal is to make the best use of available quantum hardware for proof-of-principle demonstrations and experiments, moving beyond abstract error correction theory.
- Rigorous Algorithm Analysis: Conduct deep technical evaluations comparing quantum algorithms of interest against relevant state-of-the-art classical algorithms. You will identify the specific performance characteristics and scaling behaviors that define the boundary between classical and quantum capabilities.
- Academic Strategy & Advocacy: Act as a primary advocate for IonQ’s academic presence by actively engaging with the UMD faculties. You will guide, propose, and initiate impactful academic research projects that carry significant industrial weight and commercial potential.
- IP & External Influence: Build a robust portfolio of foundational IP and high-impact-factor, peer-reviewed publications. You will represent IonQ’s technical vision at major conferences and in high-level discussions with external stakeholders, emphasizing our path to practical, application-scale quantum advantage.
- Advanced Degree: Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field with 5+ years of professional work experience in quantum research.
- Demonstrated Expertise in Quantum Algorithms: This is the core of the role. You must have a proven track record of developing and implementing novel quantum algorithms (e.g., FASQ, FTQC, or NISQ) for real-world applications.
- Strong Research Portfolio: A history of high-impact research, supported by a strong portfolio of peer-reviewed publications or significant contributions to production-grade quantum codebases.
- Technical Stack Proficiency: Mastery of Python and Qiskit (or similar quantum SDKs), along with experience in High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments.
- Hardware Awareness: While we don't expect you to build the hardware, a deep familiarity with the operation and physical principles of trapped-ion quantum computers is a significant advantage.
- Hardware-Centric Optimization: Experience working directly with hardware engineering teams to tune algorithms for specific architecture constraints.
- Error Mitigation: Proficiency in hardware-level error mitigation and advanced compilation strategies.
The approximate base salary range for this position is $167,808 - $219,704. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, equity, and a range of benefit options found on our career site.
Compensation will vary based on individual factors such as education, qualifications, and experience of the final candidate(s), specific office location, and calibration against relevant market data and internal team equity. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. We are looking for a Senior Staff Scientist – Fault-Tolerant Quantum Algorithms to help lead the technical development of highly differentiated quantum solutions that will bring value to society. As a Senior Staff Scientist – Fault-Tolerant Quantum Algorithms, you’ll guide a cross-functional team whose mandate is central to IonQ’s mission to solve the world’s most complex problems using the world’s best quantum computers.
As a technical leader in the field of fault-tolerant algorithms, you will help discover the next generation of quantum applications that will exceed state-of-the-art classical methods. You will be a core member of technical leadership in quantum algorithms, and you will drive research into new quantum algorithms and develop IP, computational resource models, long-term roadmaps, and end-to-end workflows that have the potential to disrupt the field of computing. You will also work closely with product, engineering, marketing, sales, operations, and external customers/partners to brainstorm new ideas, propose complex, multi-year initiatives and represent IonQ at high-visibility technical conferences (often all in a single day)!
Responsibilities:
- Influence the quantum applications roadmap towards fault-tolerant quantum algorithms that will make a large scientific and commercial impact by leading the origination, execution, and optimization of novel, end-to-end quantum algorithms. Guide other team members towards this goal.
- Perform detailed resource analyses of quantum algorithms and perform SWOT analysis of FTQC approaches compared to NISQ and/or classical methods.
- Provide trusted expertise and leadership in FTQC algorithms and communicate the current state-of-the-art, scaling behaviors, trade offs, cross-over points, etc. to stakeholders across the company.
- Lead technical interactions across multi-disciplinary teams to identify, define and solve challenging real-world problems using IonQ trapped-ion quantum computers.
- Define, develop, and drive adoption of industry-leading benchmarking and resource estimation methodologies, metrics, and tools.
- Develop portfolio of foundational IP and high-impact-factor peer-reviewed publications; represent IonQ externally with customer/clients and at conferences.
You’d be a good fit with:
- PhD in physics, mathematics, computer science, or similar field, or comparable field or equivalent work experience + 5 years of professional experience in the quantum computing field
- 13+ years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated expertise in FTQC algorithms that can scale to millions of qubits, billions of gates with line-of-sight to end-customer value: active portfolio of invited talks, repos, licenses, publications and/or patents.
- Active participant in the FTQC algorithm community via, e.g., development of tools (libraries, simulators, compiler), metrics (costing, resource estimation, ROI), and/or community (economic development, standards)
- Relentless dedication to optimizing algorithmic performance (accuracy, time-to-solution) through elegant theoretical equations, as well as engineering optimization
- Mastery of key mathematical techniques used in quantum computing and quantum algorithm development, and a demonstrated ability to communicate scientific results clearly.
You’d be a great fit with:
- 7+ years of professional work experience developing FT quantum algorithms that align with realistic industry problems such as computer-aided engineering, phase transitions, reaction modeling, cybersecurity, differential equations solving, simulation of physical systems, etc.
- Deep expertise in quantum algorithms for relevant use cases. This could include quantum simulation (e.g., product formulas, qubitization, qDRIFT, etc.), quantum algorithms and primitives (e.g., block-encodings, LCU, QSP, QSVT, Gibbs sampling, quantum linear systems, etc.), and/or end-to-end fault-tolerant quantum algorithms as applied to detailed use cases.
- Demonstrated expertise in Python and Qiskit or similar quantum SDK; working knowledge of C++.
- Experience proposing, winning, and executing on consultative (paid) contracts; government contracting or defense contracting experience a plus
- Experience commercializing end-to-end software utilizing hybrid computing e.g. CPU + GPU + QPU, Edge, Cloud, etc. Knowledge of CI/CD a plus.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Data Scientist will ensure continuous improvement of the program’s data quality through solutions and strategies to address business challenges. This role involves working closely with data operations and reporting teams to design, develop, and execute automated data reporting solutions with the highest standards of quality and performance. Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with product owners, customers, team members, and leaders to shape data-driven strategies.

- Experience with cloud computing tools such as AWS, Azure, and GCP.

- We are actively searching for Data Scientists, located in Maryland, to support our team. We have varying levels of Data Scientist roles, depending on years of experience and education.
- The ideal candidate should possess expertise in AI/ML, proficiency in Python, and hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow, with an added advantage if they have cyber knowledge. This role combines artificial intelligence and machine learning skills with a strong foundation in programming and cybersecurity.
What You'll be Owning
- Foundations: (Mathematical, Computational, Statistical) 2. Data Processing: (Data management and curation, data description and visualization, workflow, and reproducibility)
- Modeling, Inference, and Prediction: (Data modeling and assessment, domain-specific considerations)
- Devise strategies for extracting meaning and value from large datasets.
- Make and communicate principled conclusions from data using elements of mathematics, statistics, computer science, and application specific knowledge.
- Through analytic modeling, statistical analysis, programming, and/or another appropriate scientific method, develop and implement qualitative and quantitative methods for characterizing, exploring, and assessing large datasets in various states of organization, cleanliness, and structure that account for the unique features and limitations inherent in NSA/CSS data holdings.
- Translate practical mission needs and analytic questions related to large datasets into technical requirements and, conversely, assist others with drawing appropriate conclusions from the analysis of such data.
- Effectively communicate complex technical information to non-technical audiences. Make informed recommendations regarding competing technical solutions by maintaining awareness of the constantly shifting NSA/CSS collection, processing, storage and analytic capabilities and limitations.
What You Must Have
- Bachelor’s Degree with 3 years of relevant experience or an Associates degree with 5 years of relevant experience
- Bachelor’s Degree must be in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics Statistics, Applied Statistics, Machine learning, Data Science, Operations Research, or Computer Science or a degree in a related field (Computer Information Systems, Engineering), a degree in the physical/hard sciences (e.g. physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy), or other science disciplines with a substantial computational component (i.e. behavioral, social, or life) may be considered if it included a concentration of coursework (5 or more courses) in advanced Mathematics (typically 300 level or higher, such as linear algebra, probability and statistics, machine learning) and/or computer science (e.g. algorithms, programming, , data structures, data mining, artificial intelligence). College-level requirements, or upper-level math courses designated as elementary or basic do not count. Note: A broader range of degrees will be considered if accompanied by a Certificate in Data Science from an accredited college/university.
- Relevant experience must be in designing/implementing machine learning, data science, advanced analytical algorithms, programming (skill in at least one high-level language (e.g., Python)), statistical analysis (e.g., variability, sampling error, inference, hypothesis testing, EDA, application of linear models), data management (e.g., data cleaning and transformation), data mining, data modeling and assessment, artificial intelligence, and/or software engineering. Experience in more than one area is strongly preferred.
- Active TS/SCI with a polygraph

Participate in flow cytometry projects through assay development, validation, and execution in a timely manner. Perform assays according to SOPs and support development of new procedures and improvement of existing SOPs. May perform other cell based assays.
Essential functions of the job include but are not limited to:
- Perform Flow cytometry primarily, as well as, other immune assays
- Design and perform experiments, independently and accurately analyze and present data
- High quality output is essential with the ability to build efficiency into improving productivity metrics
- Assist in establishing and improving all procedures and required SOP documentation
- Responsible for trouble shooting and correcting routine scientific issues/problems
- Identify, update and implement emerging laboratory techniques
- Maintain and support safe lab practices and environment
- Work collaboratively with other technical teams in resource sharing and providing technical expertise
- Support new equipment operational qualifications and performance checks
- Monitor Product and Service/R&D related project expenses
- Act as a scientific resource externally to clients and internally
- Assists with writing, reviewing and editing contract and grant applications/proposals as appropriate.
- Assists with writing and publishing papers, abstracts, techniques/or chapters to maintain the scientific standard and image of the company
- May present completed work at appropriate scientific meetings and in publications
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Minimum Required:
- Master’s Degree in life sciences or other relevant field
- 5 years of relevant laboratory experience
Other Required:
- Expert level flow cytometry skills using both whole blood and isolated cells
- Demonstrated skills in monitoring cell-mediated immunity through flow cytometry, as well as, ELISpot, ELISA and MSD
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills required
- Must have the ability to organize and analyze data, as well as, prepare reports
- Must possess strong computational skills, preferably experienced with Word, Excel, Power Point, GraphPad Prism, Diva, and FlowJo
- Excellent use of judgment and discretion required
- Extended work hours may be occasionally necessary in order to meet business demands
- The ability to see and differentiate between colors on the full color spectrum
- Ability to lift and carry between 1-15 lbs.; Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. overhead with assistance; frequently required to sit, grasp, and use right/left finger dexterity; May be exposed to a cold freezer environment (Freezer temperatures range between -20ºC -196ºC)
- Must be able to read, write, speak fluently and comprehend the English language
Preferred:
- A solid understanding of current GLP or CAP/CLIA/ISO standards
- Demonstrated skills with assays used for immunophenotyping such as primary cell based assays, ELISpot, ELISA and Mesoscale
- Experience with cell sorting techniques
