About the Role

CharterUP is seeking a Senior Software Engineer – Backend to design, build, and operate the APIs and backend systems that power our mobile experience for a two-sided marketplace. This role will work closely with our Brazil-based mobile team, as well as U.S.-based engineering, product, and design partners, to deliver reliable, scalable services that enable high-quality user experiences. You’ll focus on backend service development, API design, and system reliability, helping ensure our mobile applications are fast, resilient, and able to scale with our growing business.

What You’ll Do

• Design, build, and operate scalable backend services and APIs for mobile applications, using modern and AI-assisted development practices
• Partner with mobile engineers to define API contracts and deliver seamless, high-performance user experiences
• Own service reliability, scalability, and performance, including deployment, monitoring, and optimization in AWS
• Drive backend best practices across testing, observability, and operational efficiency, leveraging AI-driven tooling where appropriate
• Collaborate cross-functionally to deliver high-impact features and identify opportunities to improve systems and workflows through AI

What You’ll Bring

• 4+ years of experience as a backend or full-stack engineer with a strong backend focus
• Proficiency in JVM-based languages (Java, Kotlin, etc.) and experience building scalable RESTful APIs
• Solid understanding of distributed systems, API design, and backend performance optimization
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS) and modern deployment practices, with exposure to AI-assisted tools for development, monitoring, or automation
• Strong ownership mindset and collaboration skills, with experience working closely with mobile or frontend teams in cross-functional environments
• Familiarity with the Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) pattern, including designing and maintaining mobile-optimized APIs that aggregate and tailor data for specific client use cases, improving performance and reducing client complexity

Compensation

Job Description

As a Torizon Cloud Backend Engineer, you will work with other members of a small geographically distributed team to build and maintain all aspects of the Torizon Cloud product. https://app.torizon.io. You will have a high level of autonomy and impact on the product. You will closely collaborate with other teams in R&D to release cross-team products.

 
Roles & Responsibilities:

    - Implement features and follow their deployment through to production
    - Create and communicate software design to other members of team (and R&D)
    - Take part in designs and work with other team-members to shape the product
    - Participate in technical design reviews and code reviews
    - Work in 2-week sprint cadence

Requirements

    - Hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering/ Computer Science, or equivalent.
    - Detail-oriented and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
    - 5 years professional experience as a software developer working with related technology.
    - Ability and passion to learn new technologies, and develop skills in modern cloud technologies.
    - Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team-oriented environment.
    - Understand REST API standards and best practices.
    - Experience with Git.
    - Knowledge of programming patterns and anti-patterns.
    - Experience using databases and familiar with best-practices.
    - Programming language experience:
        Scala
        Golang
    - Knowledge of at least one Shell Scripting Language, such as Bash, Python, or Ruby.
    - Strong proficiency in English with excellent written and verbal communication skills

Nice to Have:

    - Strong Scala experience, or experience with other functional programming languages.
    - Experience designing/architecting software systems in a micro-service architecture.
    - Experience developing applications in a micro-service architecture.
    - Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, IaC, and Container technologies.
    - Experience with Kafka, MQTT, and various other message-bus systems.
    - Experience creating a REST API.
    - Experience creating CICD pipelines.
    - Proven passion for learning new technologies and exploring new frameworks.

Description

As an Embedded Linux Software Development Engineer BSP, you are part of the R&D team, making sure our Linux BSPs and related software offerings for our SoMs (System on Modules) are constantly developed, maintained, and quality improved. The work ranges from initial bring-up, to driver and kernel development, up to build-system, tooling and distro level development.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain Embedded Linux BSPs for Toradex' embedded computer modules 
• Device driver development: optimizations, bug fixing, add new functionality  
• Eco-system: porting of third party software libraries, develop Software tools and utilities from scratch, Boot loader firmware
• Mainline selected items
• Suggest improvements related to products, software offerings, documentation, processes, etc. in order to allow continuous improvement
• Work closely with other team members in an Agile development environment and participate in technical analysis and decisions
• Communicate your work progress, coordinate with other development teams, and participate in R&D working groups

Skills

• Expertise in Embedded Linux: Bootloader and Linux Kernel
• Excellent C language knowledge and programming skills
• Knowing OpenEmbedded/Yocto Project build system
• Knowledge of industry standard interfaces and protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, USB, Ethernet, PCI Express
• C++/Python/Bash language knowledge and programming skills
• Demonstrable Electronics knowledge and work experience: the ability to read and understand hardware schematics and datasheets; to use standard development aids such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, bus protocol analyzers, etc. when developing low-level software which interacts directly with machine registers
• Familiar with communication peripherals (Bluetooth, Ethernet, Wi-Fi)
• Excellent communication skills
• Excellent English language skills reading/writing/speaking
• High-integrity, open, team player

Plus but NOT MANDATORY:

• Experience with Real Time Operating systems
• Knowledge of the ARM architecture
