Description:

Personal Care Assistant (PCA) and Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) focus on student support for daily school activities and academic engagement. The core differences between PCA and RBT is that an RBT is involved in specialized training in Applied Behavior Analysis, with passing a certification exam, to deliver services to students with higher intensity behavioral or instructional needs.

A PCA is a level 2 paraprofessional generally providing one-on-one support to help a student navigate their school day.

  • Support: Assists with daily activities, behavioral support, academic engagement, general classroom participation, collecting data, and provide daily progress notes.

An RBT is a level 3 paraprofessional who has undergone specific training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

  • Support: Higher level behavior intervention with student(s) who have significant behavioral needs. Assists with daily activities, academic engagement, general classroom participation, and provide daily progress notes.
  • Data & Analysis: Responsible for extensive data collection, graphing, and analysis to track student progress.
  • Verbal Programming: Implements complex verbal behavior programs for students with communication challenges.
  • Supervision: Unlike a PCA, an RBT must maintain their certification through the BACB and work directly under a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
