Senior Backend Engineer — ClarOps

What you'll do

ClarOps is the team that makes Clara run. We build and operate the internal systems and services that power the day-to-day of the business. A big part of the road ahead is building the integration platform that lets the rest of the Clara ecosystem plug into this backend, including the new wave of tools other teams are building on top of AI. The roadmap is one of the most interesting at the company: re-architecting how Clara runs around AI, with deep cross-functional reach and real leverage on how we scale.

We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to lead backend initiatives within the team. This role goes beyond coding: you'll shape technical direction, raise the engineering bar across the team, and own the performance and scalability of the systems that directly support Clara's operational efficiency. You'll influence architecture, drive decisions, and partner cross-functionally on some of Clara's most impactful challenges.

We move fast and trust our engineers to own outcomes end-to-end. That means autonomy to make decisions, proactivity to surface problems before they become blockers, and the attitude to push initiatives across the finish line without waiting to be told what to do.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading design and implementation for high-impact internal systems and services.
  • Building the integration platform and surfaces that let other teams across Clara, and AI agents, connect into the ClarOps backend.
  • Collaborating across the full product lifecycle, from ideation to deployment
  • Elevating the team through code reviews, pairing, and sharing what you know with peers
  • Maintaining and evolving microservices within a modern architecture
  • Driving cross-team problem-solving and architectural discussions
  • Applying AI tools to ship faster and improve how the team works

Who you are

  • 5+ years of backend development experience
  • Solid foundation in Java and Spring Boot. You don't need to have every API memorized — we expect you to lean on AI tools to move faster and fill gaps — but you need the judgment to know when the code is right, when it's wrong, and why
  • Strong understanding of microservices architecture and event-driven systems using Kafka
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms, preferably AWS, and modern dev tooling
  • English proficiency, with the ability to lead technical discussions across geographies
  • High autonomy, proactivity, and ownership mindset. You don't wait for direction — you spot what needs to happen and drive it
  • A genuine pull toward AI. You don't need to be an expert, but you're actively experimenting with AI tools in your day-to-day work, keep up with where the space is going, and are eager to apply it to how we build. At Clara, AI is part of how we work, not a side topic

Clara’s Hybrid Policy

Claridians in a hybrid mode split their time between working from the office, talking to or visiting customers, or working from home. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for each individual and team.

We don't enforce a minimum number of days for most roles, but you're expected to spend time at the office organically, and be at the office most days during your ramp-up or when required by your leader.
