Auckland One Rail (AOR) operates Auckland’s passenger rail services and maintains the network’s stations, depots, and rollingstock. As we prepare for increased services and future network demand—particularly with the City Rail Link (CRL)—we are continuing to grow our technical capability.

The Mobile Fleet Engineer is a frontline technical role focused on keeping trains available, reliable, and in service.

This role provides mobile technical support at key locations across the Auckland rail network, assisting with start-up faults, in-service failures, fault recovery, and return-to-service decisions. The focus is rapid diagnosis, safe rectification where possible, and reducing the operational impact of rollingstock faults.

You will work closely with Maintenance Delivery Managers, Fleet Control, Operations, and frontline technicians to support service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide real-time technical support and fault triage within the Fleet Control Centre
  • Diagnose and rectify rollingstock faults across the network
  • Coordinate deployment of field technicians and prioritise fault response
  • Carry out rapid troubleshooting and temporary or permanent repairs
  • Support incident response and return-to-service activities
  • Contribute to reliability improvements and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and support to team members
  • Ensure all work is compliant with safety, OEM, and AOR requirements

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Trade qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Proven experience in rail, heavy vehicle, or industrial maintenance
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic capability
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and documentation

Highly desirable:

  • Rail industry experience
  • Experience in operational or control-room environments
  • Rail safety worker competency (or willingness to obtain)
