Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture, capillary blood collection, and specimen collection according to laboratory standards.
- Accurately identify patients using approved patient identification procedures.
- Label, process, and transport specimens while maintaining specimen integrity.
- Prioritize STAT and timed laboratory collections.
- Collect specimens from patients of all ages, including neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
- Document specimen collection and patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Follow infection prevention, OSHA, HIPAA, and laboratory safety guidelines.
- Maintain adequate inventory of phlebotomy supplies.
- Collaborate with nurses, laboratory personnel, and providers to ensure timely patient care.
- Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy Training Program.
- Washington State Medical Assistant–Phlebotomist (MA-P) credential required or eligibility to obtain prior to hire.
- National phlebotomy certification (ASCP, NHA, AMT, or equivalent) preferred.
- Current BLS certification preferred.
- Minimum one (1) year of recent hospital or acute care phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Excellent communication, organization, and customer service skills.
