About the role
Vesalius Therapeutics is seeking a Computational Biologist with expertise in Bayesian inference, network analysis (structure learning, causal and counterfactual inference), sequence modeling, and large-scale biological data analysis to join our growing Data Sciences team. Reporting to the Head of Data Science, you will apply and develop state-of-the-art computational approaches to generate biological insights from internally generated and external datasets that advance our understanding of disease biology and therapeutic discovery. In addition to scientific analysis, this role will contribute to the design and implementation of scalable data pipelines and scientific data infrastructure that enable efficient access, integration, and analysis of multimodal biological datasets across the organization. The ideal candidate combines strong quantitative and biological expertise with practical software engineering and data management skills, allowing them to move seamlessly between scientific discovery and the systems required to support it.
What You’ll Do:
Computational Biology & Scientific Discovery
-
- Develop and apply advanced computational methods to generate biological insights from large-scale genomics, transcriptomics, imaging, and other multimodal datasets.
- Investigate cellular networks, disease mechanisms, patient stratification approaches, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets using statistical and machine learning methods.
- Design and implement novel analytical approaches leveraging Bayesian modeling, network analysis, causal inference, and sequence-based models.
- Integrate internal and external datasets to identify new biological hypotheses and guide experimental strategy.
- Partner closely with wet-lab scientists, statistical geneticists, and machine learning researchers to interpret results and drive scientific decision-making.
- Communicate findings and recommendations effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Data Engineering & Scientific Infrastructure
-
- Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines and workflows for ingestion, processing, quality control, and integration of biological datasets.
- Contribute to scientific data architecture and reproducible computational infrastructure that supports discovery efforts across the company.
- Build robust, production-quality analytical tools and reusable software components that improve data accessibility and computational efficiency.
- Collaborate with software and data engineering colleagues to establish best practices for data management, version control, and workflow automation.
- Support the deployment of cloud-based and high-performance computing solutions for large-scale biological analyses.
What You’ll Bring:
Required Qualifications
- D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biostatistics, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, or a related quantitative discipline.
- Strong understanding of molecular, cellular, or systems biology.
- Demonstrated expertise in statistical modeling, machine learning, network analysis, or related computational methodologies.
- Proficiency in Python, R, or similar scientific programming languages.
- Experience developing reproducible, scalable scientific software and analytical workflows.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex computational findings into actionable scientific insights.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and large-scale data processing environments.
- Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools, ETL pipelines, and modern data engineering practices.
- Experience with genomics, single-cell, spatial biology, imaging, or other high-dimensional biological datasets.
- Contributions to open-source software, scientific packages, or public GitHub repositories.
- Experience developing novel computational methods, algorithms, or software platforms in a research or industry setting.
