About the role
At Octopus Energy Trading, weβre on a mission to reshape the future of energy. As part of Octopus Energy Group, weβre creating an innovative approach to trading that will accelerate the transition to a Net Zero world. With the growth of renewables and a push toward decarbonising heating and transport, greater flexibility in the grid is essential. We are building cutting-edge technology to optimise everything from domestic EV charging to grid-scale batteries, to meet the global demand for energy flexibility.
Weβre looking for passionate and unconventional thinkers to join us on this journey, bringing a diversity of experience and ideas to shape a more efficient, flexible, and sustainable energy system.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and analytical professional to join our asset optimisation team. This role is ideal for a storyteller who loves diving into data, and who wants to help decarbonise the energy system.Β
The Performance Analyst will work closely with the commercial and technical optimisation teams. This is an opportunity to play a key role in understanding and improving the performance of our trading strategies for flexibility optimisations, everything from large grid-scale BESS down to residential assets. Youβll help build reporting, monitoring tools, and performance metrics that allow us to identify whatβs working, what isnβt, and where we should focus next. The insights generated by this work will directly feed into our development priorities. Weβre looking for someone analytical, inquisitive, and proactive, with a solid technical foundation and experience working with data in Python.

Youβll be the key source of truth in understanding how well our flexible assets are performing. Youβll quantify, understand and communicate what weβre doing well and what weβre not, and will heavily influence our strategy to ensure our development is having the greatest impact
Build and maintain reporting and monitoring tools to assess the performance of our optimisations - covering both automated algo strategies and human trader decision making.

Help improve the quality, accuracy, and accessibility of performance data
Proactively identify gaps, opportunities, and areas for improvement in how we measure and monitor performance
Assist in researching and analysing emerging market trends, competitor activity, and new opportunities to support strategic planning and commercial decision-making
Help foster a strong one-team environment by building great relationships across our commercial team, data scientists, and traders
Take on new challenges and opportunities as the role and business continue to evolve
What youβll need
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience working confidently with large and complex datasets in data-heavy environments
Practical experience doing quantitative/statistical work with python
Familiarity with git, CI/CD tools, SQL
Ability to communicate complex findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
A curious and proactive mindset, with a willingness to investigate problems and challenge existing thinking
Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt in a fast-moving environment
A natural "simplification instinct" - you enjoy unpicking complex problems and moving away from manual workarounds toward scalable, automated solutions
An eye for detail, with a very clear and organised approach
A collaborative and enthusiastic attitude, and a desire to work across technical and commercial teams
Truly values-led, passionate about decarbonisation and the energy transition
