Your future position:
Kpler’s Dry Bulk business unit is expanding its footprint in the Metals & Minerals sector. We are looking for a Market Data Analyst to take ownership of data quality and operational processes across ferrous and non-ferrous metals, solid fuels, and industrial minerals.
This is a role for someone who wants to sit close to how global commodity markets actually move. You will combine strong SQL and Python skills with a curiosity about the real-world events shaping those movements - from shifting trade flows and supply chain disruptions to changes in industrial demand, policy, and pricing dynamics.
You won’t just be processing data. You will play a key role in turning complex, high-volume datasets into reliable market intelligence used by clients to understand what is happening in global physical markets. Your work will directly influence how accurately we reflect real-world commodity flows.
As the team grows, you will also help mentor junior analysts and act as a bridge between raw data, market developments, and the insights our clients depend on to make decisions.
Your mission is to:
Take charge of specific regions and product groups, ensuring the highest standard of data quality by reviewing internal constraints, validating automated outputs, and ingesting data from diverse external sources.
Identify and implement technology and process improvements – including contributions to SQL queries, Python scripts, and pipeline tooling – to increase the efficiency and accuracy of our seaborne flow data.
Track news, trade flows, and industry developments across metals and minerals markets. Extract meaningful patterns and ensure they are well reflected in our data product.
Lead responses to ad-hoc client requests (email, video call, in-person) with rapid, well-structured analysis. Partner with Sales and Customer Success teams to address client data needs and feed insights back into internal systems.
Engage proactively with the broader data architecture; understand how upstream data sources, internal systems, and client-facing solutions interact, and propose improvements that scale across the team.
Act as a knowledgeable and self-directed team member capable of picking up complex technical tasks independently and driving them to completion with minimal supervision.
You could be a match if you are or have:
Proven experience working with large, complex datasets within commodities, shipping, logistics, supply chains, or related physical markets.
Strong proficiency in SQL and Python (PostgreSQL, MSSQL, or similar) is a core requirement. You use both to query databases, analyse data, and automate workflows, building and maintaining scripts to remove manual processes and improve efficiency. Strong Excel skills are required for analysis and commercial reporting.
Demonstrated understanding of commodity markets and the commercial drivers behind physical data. You are naturally curious about market developments, trade flows, supply and demand dynamics, and global events influencing commodity movements, and you seek to understand both what changed and why it changed when investigating anomalies.
Comfortable managing high-frequency datasets, identifying anomalies, and maintaining high standards of data quality under tight deadlines.
Strong communicator, able to translate complex technical outputs into clear, actionable insights for both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and build effective relationships across teams.
Proactive and self-directed: takes ownership, anticipates issues, and drives work independently to completion.
Experience supporting or mentoring junior colleagues, or a clear interest in developing others as the team grows.
Experience working with seaborne commodity data (e.g. AIS, port or vessel data).
Familiarity with data visualisation tools such as Tableau or similar.
